Shelia's family received friends Saturday from 10 am until service time at the funeral home. Shelia Patterson Barnes died on the snowy morning of 1 December 2020. She was in the presence of the four closest members of her family, two daughters, a Son, and her husband...And her God. Her death, at age 62, was the irreversible result of a 26 months fatal progression. She passed away a professing Christian, a loving wife and mother. (She may have loved her grandchildren most of all). She was predeceased by her parents, Hugh Francis Patterson Jr. and Mary Baker Patterson; her aunt Lou March; also by her sister Vicky Johnson, her cousin Mitzi Fisher...And a Cousin Richard Dreis. She is survived by her sister Linda Lukas: her loving uncle Hugh March; the Camilla Fisher family of Franklin Tennessee; her nephews Michael and Daniel Wilson. Her special old friends from Hickman County where she grew up are Berna Sovine and Joy Moss. (Forgive the author for his inattention to genealogy). Shelia's immediate family is her husband Sam T Barnes, Mary Jessica Workman and Jesse Patterson Barnes; her children by conquest are Molly Lisa Forsyth, Dorothy James Merritt, and Dr. Frank H. Barnes and his wife Dr. Izabela Barnes. Shelia's grandchildren in order of appearance are Fawn Chelan Hibbs, Shelby Summer Merritt, Lukas Kennedy, Gabriella Edith Forsyth; Dominic Brice Workman, Sarah Skye Merritt, Marina Leonel Barnes, Shailee Sierra Merritt, Zack Leonel Barnes, Whitson Everett Workman, Maya Leonel Barnes and Willow Taylor Workman. Shelia was born in 1958 on Wednesday June 11 in Nashville. She attended Hickman County High School and went on to become the honor graduate x-ray technician At Columbia Community College. She began working at Cookeville General Hospital in 1976. She and Sam were married at the Baths on the island of Virgin Gorda on the full moon of April 1982. Jessica was born into their lives in April 1983. The next life-changing event occurred in 1986 when Shelia and Sam became members of a worldwide anonymous 12-Step recovery program. Then in August 1987 Jesse was born. Shelia's civic and service involvements in Cookeville were many. She was president of the Bryan Symphony Guild 1993-94, president Of Town and Gown society 2006-08. She was Founding member of the Collectors Club and a member of both the Friends of the Depot and the History Museums. She was on the board of directors of the Bryan Symphony orchestra 1993 through 1994. Shelia was a Member of the women's medical auxiliary of Cookeville General Hospital, the Garden club, Rose Society, St. Mike's tasting luncheon, and on the organization committee for the first Fall Fun Fest. In the early 1990s she taught Sunday school at St. Michael's Episcopal Church and was a Scout mother for the Cub Scouts. Shelia had a talent for pottery, gardening, goat and chicken raising, but even more so for teaching Yoga. She became an instructor and taught at Leisure Services for five or six years. The foundation for all her accomplishments was her service in the God directed 12-step recovery program. Shelia considered her greatest honor was the performance of the Bryan Symphony Orchestra on 22 March 1994. At that time she was surprised to hear the orchestra play the melody she had written on the piano and which had been named FUR SHELIA and orchestrated by Dr. James Wattenbarger and Dr. Bob Jager. BUT, I believe, her crowning achievements were homemaking and her biscuits. Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
