Meta E. “Betty” Lowery, 99, of Springfield, died at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at Memorial Medical Center. Betty was born on November 27, 1921 in Springfield, the daughter of Roman P. Dorr, Sr. and Meta C. Horin Dorr. She married Dwight E. Lowery, Sr. on November 16, 1947; he preceded her in death on July 12, 1974. Betty was a graduate of Lanphier High School and she served her country in the United States Navy. She was a member of Sangamon Valley WAVES and St. John’s Retirees. For 20 years, Betty worked between the offices of Dr. Richard Allyn, Dr. Maher, Dr. Howard, and Dr. Zaricznyj. She then retired from St. John’s Hospital after 12 years as a secretary and medical transcriptionist. She was also preceded in death by her two sons, Dwight E. Lowery, Jr. and Brian T. Lowery; her parents; sister, Roma Long; and daughter in law, Sandra Lowery. Betty is survived by her sons, Michael L. of Cromwell, IN, Roger P. (wife, Judy), John M. (wife, Patty), Ralph J. (wife, Laurie) Lowery, and Brett A. (wife, Vickie) Lowery, all of Springfield; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roman (wife, Shirley) Dorr, Jr. of Springfield and Ralph (wife, Anne) Dorr, of Wilmington, NC; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 17, 2020, at St. Katherine Drexel Parish at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 722 South 12th St., Springfield, IL 62703, with Rev. Peter Chineke, celebrant. Illinois COVID-19 guidance will be followed, requiring face coverings and limiting attendance. Family and friends may view the Mass via livestream here. Private burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
