The family writes -- On Tuesday, December 1, 2020, Eugene Elson, loving husband of Phyllis Elson, devoted father of Ginesse Elson and Michael Elson, and doting grandfather to Lindsy and Jordana Spiegelman passed away at the age of seventy seven. Gene was born on December 29, 1942, in Newark, NJ. He graduated from Weequahic High School where he met his devoted wife of fifty five years Phyllis (nee Gordon). Before marrying, Gene enlisted in the Army Reserves and completed six years of duty. As a young married couple, they lived in Elizabeth, moved to Union and then Springfield. Together they raised two children. Gene began his career with Penn Tool Co. in 1964 which was a small hardware store on Market St. in Newark, NJ. It derived its name from its close proximity to Newark Penn Station. The company then moved to Springfield Avenue in Maplewood, NJ. Gene transformed the business into a company specializing in precision measuring instruments for the metalworking community. His son Michael joined the business in 1992. Together they transitioned Penn Tool Co. from sales through a paper catalogue to online purchasing over the internet. Nothing made Gene happier than seeing his business flourish. He was an exceptional boss and created many opportunities for his valued employees over his fifty two year career. Gene loved his family and they adored him. He took great pride in the special bonds that were created. He and Phyllis enjoyed traveling together and their second home at the Jersey Shore. He had a passion for the arts, NYC, listening to jazz, playing tennis and fishing. He was known for his calming personality, cool style and impeccable taste.
