James "Jim" Ray Henderson Obituary

James “Jim” Ray Henderson, 75, passed away on November 29, 2020 after a long battle with cancer. He was born on September 26, 1945 to Howard L. Henderson and Ersalee (Jolly) Henderson. He graduated from Independence High School and graduated Kansas State College, now Pittsburg State University, with a degree in Industrial Arts Education in 1967.

He married Cathy Bever in 1969, and they later divorced. He married Letta Staggs in 1984, and they also later divorced.

Jim worked at the Coffeyville Refinery for 20 years and pursued his passion of raising cattle and hogs since he was 12 years old. He enjoyed passing on his knowledge and experience to the younger generations and took great pleasure in working and mentoring kids wherever he met them. Fishing, deer hunting, and shooting a great game of pool were his way of staying sharp.

He is survived by his two sons, Steven Henderson (wife Lauryn) of Houston, Texas and Michael “Scott” Henderson (wife Shelley) of Independence, Kansas. Jim had 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Jim is also survived by his brother Howard “Sonny” Henderson and sister Virginia Bredehoft, both of rural Independence.

No memorial services are planned per Jim’s wishes. Remembrances can be made to American Cancer Society and/or AWOL of Independence. To leave the family a special message of condolence, please visit www.pottsfuneralhome.com.
