Col. Edward "Ned" C. Redican

Colonel Edward C. “Ned” Redican, USAF (Ret.), passed away peacefully in his sleep November 27th, 2020. Ned is survived by his of wife of 62 years, Eleanor Hynes Redican, and four daughters: Kate Redican Hall, Eleanor Redican, Nancy Redican and Annmarie Cottage - and two grandchildren: Edward and Emma Cottage. A funeral mass is planned for June 11th at 10:15AM at the Church of the Nativity, Burke, VA, immediately followed by a 1PM internment at Arlington National Cemetery (arrive by 12:15) and reception at Patton Hall on Joint Base Meyer Henderson Hall (JMBHH). A valid government ID is required for access to Arlington Cemetery. Common Access Card (CAC) or DoD or other federally affiliated ID card is required for access to JMBHH. For all others, Visitor Passes may be obtained via JBMHH (army.mil). . The funeral service will be streamed at https://www.youtube.com/c/NativityParishBurke/videos. Born in Worcester, MA in 1933, Ned was commissioned into the Air Force through ROTC in 1956 after earning a BS in Political Science from the College of The Holy Cross. After earning Navigator Wings, he served as an early air-to-air refueling specialist and Navigator/Instructor on KC-97 Tankers out of Pease AFB, NH. From Pease he flew Polar Region missions, refueling aircraft conducting Cold War reconnaissance. During a break from active duty he flew C-97 aircraft with the NH Air National Guard. Ned returned to active service during the “Berlin Wall” crisis in 1961 for worldwide transport missions, and then transferred to McGuire AFB, NJ where he flew C-118B aircraft in Military Air Transport Services (MAC and AMC.) While in Wiesbaden, Germany Capt Redican served as a Navigator/Flight Instructor and for reconnaissance over East Germany and Eastern Europe. (the then Soviet Union). He also earned an MS in Education Administration from the University of Southern California. In 1968 Ned was assigned to the 19th Air Commando Squadron in the Republic of Vietnam, logging over 400 combat hours in C-123 and C-119 aircraft. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for repeated missions under heavy fire. After Vietnam Maj Redican was an Assistant Professor of Aerospace Studies at the University of Notre Dame, teaching courses in both AFROTC and the College of Engineering and earning an MA in International Relations. In 1972 he reported to the Pentagon as Senior Editor, later Chief of what is now known as the AF Intelligence Services. In 1975, Lt Col Redican was assigned to the J-5 of the Org. of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as a Political/Military Planner in the Middle East Division. In 1978 he moved to the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) International Security Affairs as Country Director for Egypt. While with OSD Col Redican was a contributor to the Camp David Peace Accords and involved in the implementation of a Security Assistance Program for Egypt after the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty in 1979. While at the Pentagon Col Redican was also assigned to the Department of State as DOD Action Officer on several Crisis Action Teams (Cyprus ‘74, Lebanon ’77, Zaire ’81). After retiring from the USAF in 1982, Ned worked as a Defense Consultant, ultimately opening his own firm, Redco International, Ltd. He was an Adjunct Faculty Lecturer at Marymount University for five years. Ned was active in the community, serving on the HOA Finance Board and in his church as Eucharistic Minister and member of the Knights of Columbus.
