Bernice was born in Dickinson on August 15, 1929, the daughter of Peter and Anna (Glaser) Wandler. Growing up, she attended school in the Schefield area. As a young woman she began working as a nursing assistant in both x-ray and radiology. One day while walking home from work, August Zastoupil drove by and asked if she needed a ride. From that simple gesture, they began their courtship. Bernice and August were married in September of 1949. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Diane “Dino”, Marvin, Judy and Pam. Together they raised their family in Dickinson where August owned and operated ‘August’s Cabinet Shop’. He built several homes in the area and helped build St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. The cross and candelabra, which are still used today, were crafted from wood gathered in the badlands by Bernice and August. Bernice worked alongside her husband as the bookkeeper for August’s business and kept things running smoothly. She was intrigued with fashion and loved clothing and shopping. Bernice was a great cook and enjoyed teaching her children all of her secrets. She loved helping raise her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a lifelong member of St. Wenceslaus. Bernice will be missed by all who knew her. Bernice is survived by her son, Marvin Zastoupil of Dickinson; daughters, Judy (Dale) Burwick, Pam (Larry) Melchior, both of Dickinson; brother, Jack (Carrie) Wandler of Dickinson; grandchildren, Robert, Ryan and Troy Zastoupil, Candace and Courtney Burwick; great-grandchildren, Kara, Kasie and great-great-grandchildren, Kai, Kinsley. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Anna Wandler; husband, August (2010); daughter, Diane “Dino” Zastoupil; sisters, Marilyn (Johnny) Martin, Monica (Arnold) Steiner. In lieu of flowers, Bernice’s family suggests planting a tree in honor of her family’s woodworking heritage.
