Dorothy A. Zimmerly, 93, of Independence, IA died on Sunday November 29, 2020 at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, IA. Dorothy was born on June 10, 1927 in Quasqueton, IA the daughter of Roy and Zoe (Smith) Manson. She was raised in Quasqueton and was a 1946 graduate of the Quasqueton High School. On September 5, 1957 she married Robert A. Zimmerly in Corinth, Mississippi. Dorothy worked for many years at Micro Switch in Independence and Cedar Rapids, IA. She also enjoyed working as a waitress at several Cafés in Independence but spent the longest time serving at the Pinicon Hotel Café. Dorothy was passionate about baking. At Christmas time she often would bake cakes, pies, and ten to fifteen different cookies. She would package her treats in beautiful boxes and give them away to her friends and different businesses throughout Independence. She enjoyed staying busy and took up crocheting. She spent many hours making beautiful afghans and slippers, that she gave away to people she thought were special to her. Every Friday when Robert returned home from his long-haul trips, she would help him wash and wax his Semi tractor. Together they had a love for music. Robert encouraged Dorothy to learn the accordion, and later bought her one. Her love of music led her to learn by ear how to play the organ. She is survived by her husband of sixty-three years, Robert Zimmerly. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Zoe Manson, a sister Lois Jones, and three brothers, Glen, LaVerne, and Virgil Manson. A Graveside Service was held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence, IA. The Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory assisted the family with services.
