Charlotte Louise Shank

Charlotte Louise Shank, 92, affectionally known as "Checky" of the Williamsport Retirement Community and formerly of Fairplay, Maryland passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at Doeys House for Hospice of Washington County (HWC) from complications of Covid-19. Born December 9, 1927, in Washington County, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Herman David and Katherine Alice Sheffler Barkdoll. The Barkdoll family were farmers and Charlotte helped on the farm and would ride the work horses bareback for fun. She was a 1946 graduate of Williamsport High School. She was a lifelong member of the St James Brethren Church in St. James, Maryland, and was a founding member of the Sextet Church Choir. The vocal ensemble was immensely popular and would travel and perform at many religious services and community events. Charlottes passion was singing and she performed at several local weddings. In addition to raising a family, Charlotte worked in the food service industry at Potomac Edison and the St James School. Charlotte was most proud of her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin H. Shank on March 17, 2012. Charlotte is survived by one son, Jeff Shank (Sondra) of Boonsboro, Maryland, two daughters, Debby Hartman (Dave) of Stevensville, Maryland and Margaret Shank (Joanne) of Olney, Maryland, four grandchildren; Deena Caniford (Jason) of Williamsport, Maryland, Michael Shank (Kristi) of Sharpsburg, Maryland, Ashley DeVine (Travers) of Stevensville, Maryland and Natalie Plummer (Josh) of Elkridge, Maryland; and six great-grandchildren; Carli Shank (Billy), Sydney Kirchner, Jenna Shank, Peyton Kirchner, Harper DeVine and Hailey Plummer. Charlotte is also survived by loving sisters Mary Clever (Don) and Joann Clark (Jimmy) of Hagerstown, Kathryn Nave (Les) and Maxine Smith (Glen) of Fairplay, Maryland, and Janet Norris (Jimmy) of Frederick, Maryland, two sister-in-laws, Libby Barkdoll of Wolfsville, Maryland, Barbara Jacob of Maugansville, Maryland and an abundance of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters Goldie Stouffer, Edna Carter, Elizabeth Grove, Helen Lung, and brothers, Alfred Barkdoll, Russell Barkdoll, Orville Barkdoll, Francis Barkdoll, Arthur Barkdoll, James Barkdoll, and Walter "Pete" Barkdoll. Charlotte will be remembered for her "hearty" laugh, fondness for others and wonderful singing voice. She will forever sing in our hearts. Internment will be privately held at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Williamsport, Maryland. A celebration of her life will be scheduled at a later date.
