Verlensia Brownlee Pitts

Verlensia Brownlee Pitts, age 78, of Milton, Florida, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 28, 2020, at the Covenant Care Center, located at West Florida Hospital, in Pensacola, Florida. She was born on March 29, 1942, in Pensacola, Florida, to Luther and Pearlie Brownlee. She was a graduate of Theodore High School in 1960. She joined the Navy in 1960, and rose to the rank of Yeoman Third Class (E-4). It was during her time in the Navy that she met Jim Pitts, who would become her husband on August 9, 1963. As a military wife, Verlensia supported her husband and children immensely. Verlensia earned her AA from Pensacola Junior College in Education. Verlensia loved working with children. She taught Sunday School, and also worked as a Teacher Assistant in Santa Rosa County Schools for eighteen years. She retired in 2004. During her time as a military wife, Jim and Verlensia lived in Pensacola, Memphis, and Virginia Beach, and they eventually settled in Milton, Florida, in 1977. Verlensia has been an active member of Margaret Street Church of Christ since June 1977. Verlensia was the ultimate homemaker, wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. She believed in serving others with her gifts of baking and sewing. She enjoyed spending time with the Golden Agers of Margaret Street and working in the church pantry. She also enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. She is preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Pearlie Brownlee. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Jim Pitts; son, Jimmy (MaryAnne) Pitts; two daughters, Michele (Breck) Barlow and Rachel (Larry) Benboe; three sisters, Cynthia Hinson, of Texas, Vader (Warren) Bayhi, of Louisiana, and Peggy (Andy) Vadaro, of Rutledge, Alabama; eight grandchildren, Dana (Kat) and Derek Pitts, Caleb (Courtney) and Seth Barlow, Rebecca, Drayton (Courtney), and Lyndee and Talmadge Hale; great-grandson, Jaylen Westry; and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 1, 2020, at Margaret Street Church of Christ, in Milton, Florida, with Minister Troy Spradlin officiating. Visitation will be held at 2:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., prior to the services. Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 2, 2020, at Barrancas National Cemetery, onboard Pensacola Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida, with Lewis Funeral Home of Milton directing. The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the healthcare workers at Santa Rosa Medical Center, West Florida Hospital and Covenant Hospice Care of Pensacola, that provided care for Verlensia.
