Stephen Andrew “Andy” Thompson, 72, of Rush, passed away Sunday, November 29, 2020, of Covid-19 in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

He was born October 17, 1948, in Oakland, California, a son of the late Medley and Norma Hillman Thompson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lacy Thompson; son, Christopher Timothy Thompson and a brother, Scotty Thompson.

Andy was a graduate of Boyd County High School. Always the perpetual student he received his bachelor’s degree from Ohio University and his master’s degree from the University of Kentucky. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era and retired as an Electrician from Armco Steel. He went on to teach as a college professor at Ohio University, University of Kentucky, Shawnee University and Pikeville College.

Andy found his true calling working as a Drug and Alcohol Abuse Counselor at Recovery Works in South Shore and also at Pathways in Grayson. He was very involved in the Recovery Community in the tristate. He was blessed to be able to save many lives through the recovery process while leading groups for Young People in Recovery, Upon Awakening, Hope Group and Celebrate Recovery. Being in recovery himself, he was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous and volunteered for Community Hospice.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Stephen Brent (Tonya) Cossett of Stone Mountain, Ga., Medley (Michelle) Thompson of Ashland, Jeremy Thompson of Rush, Kara (Chris) Feller of Rush, and Karl Thompson of South Shore, Ky.,; sister, Karla (Jim) Thomas of Barnesville, Oh.; grandchildren, Andrea, Emma, Chaney, Brynlee and Karson; and a host of extended family members and friends.

A memorial service will be announced at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Andy’s memory be directed to House of Grace Recovery or House of Grace Food Pantry, 2413 Greenup Avenue, Ashland, Ky., 41101.
