Ernst John Westermann Obituary

Ernst John “Bud” Westermann of Loveland died early in the morning of 27 November at the age of 92. He transited peacefully to his reward in the presence of his wife and children after a long, non-Covid-related illness. Bud began his life in the family home in Brighton, Colorado, on 25 May 1928, the youngest of five children born to Ernst and Anna (Frauhiger) Westermann. He attended Zion Lutheran School through 8th grade and graduated from Brighton High School in 1946. Bud earned a BS from the University of Colorado and an MBA from Denver University, between which he served a four-year, stateside hitch in the US Airforce. In the mid-1950s Bud began working at Wall Clothing on Main St. in Brighton and soon bought into the business as a partner. Prior to that, his work history included Bechtold’s grocery, Kuner’s, and Great Western Sugar. He married Jeanne Knechtel in Kansas City, Missouri, on 14 June 1958, and the couple moved into their house on Strong Street in Brighton across the street and down the block from his boyhood home. In 1972 the Westermanns moved to Loveland to open a branch of Wall’s on Cleveland Avenue. Soon Bud and Jeanne purchased the business and building, and Westermann’s Department Store remained a fixture in Loveland’s evolving Downtown until 1991. Bud also worked as a Realtor for Remax and then in semi-retirement, as a part-time salesman at Collins Cashway Lumber in Loveland. Bud was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Brighton and of Immanuel and Mount Olive Lutheran Churches in Loveland. He was a member of the board of Thompson Valley Ambulance Service, a president of the Loveland Chamber of Commerce, and he served two terms on the Loveland City Council. To Bud, however, the most important achievement in his life and his biggest joy was being a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle. He deeply loved and was loved deeply by his family. Bud is survived by his wife Jeanne, his son Eric, his daughter Andrea Sheldon (Lonnie), his grandson Jonathan Sheldon (Corey), his granddaughters Kelly Anna and Gwendolyn Sheldon, great granddaughter Caroline Jane Sheldon (Jonathan and Corey), and beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Edwin and sisters Irma Bettger, Annette Waiss, and Lenore Westermann. Services are private. Memorials may be made to Mount Olive Lutheran Church.
