Joan Elmore Nutting Havre de Grace, Maryland Obituary

Joan Elmore Nutting

Joan “Joanie” Eva Elmore-Nutting, 70, of Havre de Grace, MD, formerly of Ocean Township, NJ, passed away on November 21, 2020. Born August 11, 1950 in Long Branch, NJ, she is predeceased by her parents Robert Lawrence Simons and Emily Ann Simons. Joanie was a loving wife and devoted mother and sister who always put her family first. She was an amazing baker and especially enjoyed baking her grandmother’s favorite recipes. Her beautiful smile lit up a room, her laughter was contagious, and her sense of humor brought joy to many. Joanie loved the ocean as she grew up on the Jersey Shore as well as on her family’s farm. Joanie met her husband and best friend, William, in 1979. She loved to share stories of nights spent dancing out-on-the town with her husband in the earlier years of their relationship. They married and lived together at the Jersey Shore until Joanie’s job took her south to Maryland, where she was a Knowledge Management Specialist and Social Media Director with the Department of Defense Aberdeen Proving Ground. In this position she won multiple Keith L. Ware Public Affairs Awards, including 1st place (2012) and 2nd place (2013) for Army Knowledge, 1st place for Communicating the Critical Link Campaign (2014), and 1st place for Command Website (2014). She and William lived in Havre de Grace, Maryland with their pets and had many friends at the church and also became very close friends with their loving neighbors. Joanie was not only a wife, mother and grandmother, she was also an inspiration to many and always the one you could count on to support you and your dreams. Further, she was an artist and creative soul who always had a positive attitude! Joanie wrote poetry and even participated in playwriting and music composition for theatre performances. Most of all, Joanie loved music, all kinds, but especially the kind that spoke to her heart. Joanie and William would spend hours just listening and singing along to songs always playing in the background of their home. Joanie was immensely proud of her entire family, and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories behind. Survivors include her husband, Ralph William Nutting, and sons Jimmy Elmore (Jessica), Gallagher Nutting (Aly) and Travis Nutting; grandchildren, Dorian, Erika, Aiden, Ellis, and Ethan ; siblings Barbara Umstadter (Grant), Diane Simons, Robert Simons (Marilyn); nieces and nephews, Amy, Annalisa, Karl, Justin and Nicholas; grandnieces, Amelia, Violet and Edie; several cousins, close family friends, and best friends. Due to the circumstances of the current pandemic, the family has chosen to honor Joanie and celebrate her life with a memorial service that will be planned for a later date in 2021.
