Gary R. Shuler Obituary

Gary R. Shuler, 80, of Harrisburg, passed away Wednesday November 25, 2020 at UPMC Community General Osteopathic Hospital. Born August 8, 1940, in Harrisburg, he was the son of the late Elmer Shuler and Pauline M. (Peirce) Shuler Hockenberry. On July 14, 1971, he was united in marriage with Edith A. (Jacobs) Shuler, with whom he had shared a devoted union of nearly 50 years. Gary enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1959 and honorably served his country for 20 years prior to his discharge in 1979 as a Quartermaster. Following his discharge, he worked in retail at Karns Quality Foods and Festival Foods before retiring from Ingram Micro. Gary earned an Associates degree in Business from Penn State. A member of Eshleman-Pankake-Wolf V.F.W. Post #9639, he was a former Post Commander and was actively involved in the Honor Guard. He was also a Life Member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #542. Gary enjoyed Bowling, often participating in Leagues, and taking cruises with Edith – two of their most memorable destinations were the Bahamas and Western Caribbean. An avid sports fan, he rooted for Penn State Football and was a season ticket holder for the Harrisburg Senators. Gary also found contentment in quiet times spent watching television and reading. In addition to his wife, Edith, he is survived by his son, Gary R. Shuler, Jr., of Florence, KY, and his significant other, Kelly D. Dickens, and daughter, Cynthia L. Shuler, of Harrisburg. He is also survived by his sisters, Sandra M. Shuler, of New Cumberland and Marilyn L. Fry, of Dauphin. His Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday December 3, 2020 at the Jesse H. Geigle Funeral Home, Inc., 2100 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, with Rev. Dr. Keith A. Blank, officiating. Interment with Military Honors conferred by his fellow Honor Guard members of V.F.W. Post #9639 will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends during his viewing, from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M., prior to the service. In keeping with current health guidelines, attendees are encouraged to exercise proper precautions including the wearing of face coverings and appropriate social distancing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the American Heart Association at heart.org or the American Diabetes Association at diabetes.org.
