William H. Garr Obituary

On Sunday, November 29, 2020, William “Bill” Hansel Garr, 91 of Toughkenamon, PA, departed this life and was taken home peacefully by our lord and savior.  He was the husband of Danford V. Garr (who passed away in September 2018).  Bill and Danford had celebrated 56 years of marriage in 2018.  Born in Johnson City, TN, Bill was the son of William Clayton Garr and Mary Lou Annie Garr.

Bill is survived by his son, Roger Garr (Pat) of Mount Airy, NC, daughter, Susan V. Jester Maldonado of Wytheville, VA, daughter-in-law Cynthia Jester of Avondale, (12) grandchildren:  Ray Jumper, Jr. (Angela) of Oxford, PA, Crystal Jester of Avondale, PA, Melissa Sue Perez (Shane) of Starke, FL, Connie Mimm of Brunswick, GA, Brittany Jo McKenzie and Jennifer Mimm of Jacksonville, FL, Danielle Mimm of Speedwell, VA, Jessica Mimm (Whitney) of Rural Retreat, VA, Charles Mimm (Danielle) of Fort White, FL, Lisa Phipps (Wendell) of  Mount Airy, NC,  Carrie Garr of Clairmont, NC and Todd Garr (Julie) of Dobson, NC, (21) Great Grandchildren: Emilee, David, Amaury, Ana, Olivia, William, Isabella, Caitlyn, Jacob, Joey, Shyanne, Harley, Ethan, Austin, Aiden, Alex, Lexie, Tristan, Jaden, Sage, Joseph and Josea, and, (4) Great-Great Grandchildren Savannah, Natalie, Wyatt and Storm.  Bill behind all those listed above as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends that will miss him.

We were blessed to have him on this earth for 91 years.  Known to many as Bill, Dad, Poppop, Uncle Bill, Hansel and Willie, Bill will be missed by all that had known him and all of the lives that he touched.

Bill was a veteran of the United States Army, he worked at the papermills in Downingtown and Beaver Dam and retired after working at Chatham Acres (currently known as Twin Pines) for 20 years as a driver.

Handsome Hansel, as he was also known by, was definitely a jokester, always telling a joke or making a wise comment.  He was one of the pickiest eaters that we have known.  He did not eat poultry of any time and the joke with him was that he did not eat anything that was good for him.  He loved hard candy, cheese curls, cheese, and anything that was sweet.  His favorite meal was Danford’s mashed potatoes, cornbread and pinto beans.  Bill was known for collecting aluminum cans and recycling them for extra cash.  People in the community would save them and leave them outside for him to pick-up.  After he drove around and picked up the aluminum cans, he would take them home, crush them and then sort them by the type of aluminum.  He knew exactly how many cans he had so the guys at the scrap yard did not short him, he even knew the weights of different aluminum cans.  He was an avid reader and it didn’t matter what type of book it was.  He loved watching wrestling (WWE), the Philadelphia Phillies, Jerry Springer, Judge Judy and old western movies.  He loved listening to Bluegrass and Country music.

Bill was predeceased by his wife Danford Garr, his parents, his first wife Virginia Garr, his sons Billy Garr, Clayton Garr, Robert Jester, grandson Robert D. Mimm, infant granddaughter Billie Jo Garr, brothers Bob, Ray, Burt and Glenn and twin sister Hazel.

The family would like to thank Eric, Julie, Kaliegh, Kirk and Shawn from Bayada Hospice of Media, PA, the Coatesville VA Medical Center, as well as his caregivers Sharon and Sarah for taking such good care of him.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at the Longwood Funeral Home & Cremation of Matthew Genereux, 913 East Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square.  The viewing will be from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm.  Internment with Military Honors, will follow the funeral service in Union Hill Cemetery.
