Bill Herrington, 84, passed away at his ranch outside of Strawn on Sunday, November 29, 2020. A funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 3, 2020, at the New Hope Baptist Church in Ranger, Texas. Bill’s brother Larry Herrington will officiate the service. His interment will follow at the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Ranger under the direction of Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home staff. The family will welcome friends for a visitation from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 2, in the Melton-Kitchens Chapel of Memories. Billy Edward Harrington was born on November 8, 1936, in Quanah, Texas, to parents Dawson Z. Herrington and Lottye (McNabb) Herrington. After graduating from Ranger High School, Bill attended and graduated from Abilene Christian University, then completed his graduate studies at Texas Tech University. Along with being a high school football coach for almost a decade, he also served the City of Fort Worth for over 23 years, followed by serving as the City Manager for the towns of Springtown and Van Alstyne. Prior to becoming a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Ranger, Bill helped with the praise and worship team at Harmon Church in Weatherford, Texas. When he had time to volunteer, you could find Bill helping with the Parker County Emergency Service District, Texas State Association of Fire and Emergency Districts, Springtown Planning and Zoning Commission, and Coalition of Retired Employees. As a child, Bill was raised on a ranch in Ranger, Texas. From the day he could walk, and until the day he went to be with the Lord, he was a cowboy. Whenever he could, he was on a horse looking for anything to rope. The last few months, sometimes he would have his grandson run through the yard and he would rope him. You cannot be a cowboy without hard work. That is where Bill got his work ethic. Whatever he did, he gave 100% and that is what he expected from everyone. If you were lucky enough to be taught anything from Bill, you would know that for a fact. But the way he taught or coached, it was easy to give all you had. After a day with him on the golf course, you would believe that you were good enough to be on the PGA Tour. If you were having a bad day and not doing exactly what he said, he would let you know. He would sometimes say, "You should write a book titled, How to Sink your 3rd Putt or The Best Way to Find Your Ball". Bill gave 100% to God. Above everything Bill was faithful to God. No matter how he felt, if he could walk, he was in church and when he could not get out of bed and could hardly talk, he was giving praise and thanks to God for his life. Bill is survived by his wife of 50 years, Donna; daughters Heather Gatson & husband Michael, and Bunny Schur & husband Lee; grandchildren Trew Gaston Perez & husband Alex, Titus Gaston, Lezli Schur Cadenhead & husband Josh, Trey Schur & wife Lacey, and Grant Schur & wife Lyndsie; Zaytha Perez, Garett Cadenhead, Rylee Cadenhead, Blythe Cadenhead, Everlee Schur, Ross Schur, and Kynlee Schur; brother Larry Herrington & wife Sherry; sister-in-law Jammie Horton & husband Jack; as well as nieces and nephews Betsy Herrington, Brody Herrington & wife Candace, and Jessica Gentry McCartney & husband Jay.
