Dr. Lacy J. McLaurin the son of the late Lacy Longfellow McLaurin and the late Mary Elizabeth McLaurin, was born in Wilson, North Carolina on May 3, 1947; and promoted to glory on November 28, 2020 at home in Burke, Virginia. He was invited in matrimony for 51 years to his devoted and loving wife Annie Doris DuPree McLaurin, from this union there were three daughters. He enjoyed spending time with Annie and they were seldom found apart. Dr. McLaurin adored his children and grandchildren and enjoyed watching them mature into fine young people. In essence, his family was one of his ministries and he proved it each day of his life. Dr. Lacy J. McLaurin was a proud Member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. He attended Elizabeth City State University in 1965-1969 where he obtained a B.S. Degree in Biology. On January 20, 1967 he was inducted into the Gamma Rho Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity at Elizabeth City State University. Dr. McLaurin served his fraternity in several offices; he was Vice President, Dean of Probates and Dean of Pledges. Additionally, Dr. McLaurin was selected, by the university, for inclusion in the publication: Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges 1968-1969. Dr. McLaurin was also inducted in Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society in 1968; he graduated with honors in 1969. Dr. McLaurin was the founding President of Friends of Jack and Jill of America Inc. He received an award for outstanding dedicated service for his service from 1983-1989. Dr. McLaurin is presently a proud member of Theta Tau Sigma graduate chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. During his tenure in the chapter, he has worked diligently and been most passionate in an effort to make Sigma License Plates available to the brothers in Virginia. On June 30, 2018 he received the fatherhood award for recognition of Processing Outstanding Parenting Skills as a father advisor, mentor and friend. He has also been very supportive of the many service initiatives of his chapter. Further, in 1994, Dr. McLaurin was presented a special recognition award as a Romeo in recognition of his time and assistant in helping NUPI chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Arlington, VA. Dr. McLaurin is retired from the Alexandria Public School System where he was employed for thirty-one years. During his tenure in Alexandria Schools he served as a science teacher, department head, and an Assistant Principal. During his time in Alexandria, Dr. McLaurin created several successful programs. At Francis C. Hammond Junior High School, he created and supervised a program for behaviorally challenged students. The students demonstrated improvement in grades and behavior. Dr. McLaurin’s program received many accolades from the administration at Francis C. Hammond, as well as other educators throughout Virginia, who emulated The Behavior Modification Point System Program. Additionally, Dr. McLaurin created, instituted and supervised a Mentor Program at the Ninth Grade Center in Alexandria Virginia Public Schools; It was for Dr. McLaurin’s efforts to improve student behavior, attendance and grades, Dr. McLaurin was awarded “The Whole Village Award” by The Virginia Education Association and Alexandria School System on June 15, 2000. Upon retiring from the Alexandria Public School System, Dr. McLaurin served as an Assistant Principal in Montgomery County at Watkins Mill High School for five years. Among his many other administrative duties he supervised the Saturday School Program. This was a program where students could come into the school, on Saturday, and receive needed tutoring in a wide range of subjects. Dr. McLaurin was baptized on October 5, 1947. Dr. McLaurin has continued his desire to serve by serving in various church organizations. He is a member of Greater Little Zion Baptist Church in Fairfax, Virginia. He has served on the Trustee Board, The Men Ministry, The Male Choir, and The Beautification Ministry. On June 24, 2018 he was awarded “The Unsung Hero Award” by The Men Ministry. Dr. McLaurin believes that learning takes place throughout life. His belief in continued scholarship is indicated as he earned a Master of Education Degree in School Administration and Supervision from George Mason University 1974. On January 24, 1993 Dr. McLaurin was initiated into Phi Delta Kappa. In addition, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy from George Mason University in 1994 in Public and School Administration. His dissertation entitled: “An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Teacher Attributional Style and Student Misbehavior in Alexandria Virginia Secondary Public Schools 1994” He received raved reviews by members of his committee and department head. Also Dr. McLaurin is one of a very few students to pass his Ph.D. qualifying exam “with highest distinction”. Dr. McLaurin enjoyed dancing, traveling, reading, writing, listening to all types of music singing, photography, drawing, teaching and fellowshipping with family and church members at Greater Little Zion Baptist Church. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and a strong supporter of his entire family and church. He left an impression on all the hearts of everyone he met and was always concerned about the welfare of others.
