Robert Lee Gilmartin Obituary

Bob was born to Mary Elizabeth Gilmartin in Terre Haute, Indiana. They spent his early years with his grandparents, John J. Gilmartin and Agnes (Cosgrove) Gilmartin in South Bend, Indiana surrounded by doting Aunts Angeline (Gilmartin) O’Donnell, Barbara (Gilmartin) Lamb, and Uncle Johnny Gilmartin while his mother served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his mother’s discharge; Bob moved to Toledo, Ohio with his mother and her husband, Alvin W. Jennings. Soon they relocated to Whitehouse, Ohio where Bob attended Monclova Elementary before graduating from Anthony Wayne High school where Bob lettered in Football, Basketball, and Track. After graduation, Bob began a 30+ year career at the Pilliod Cabinet Company in Swanton, rising from sweeping floors and cleaning booths to Plant Manager. Bob married the former Barbara Jean “Jeannie” Bryan of Swanton immediately after her graduation from High School on June 7, 1958 to begin raising their family. Bob lost Jeannie in 1985. With the impending demise of Pilliod’s, Bob moved to El Paso, TX to work for Sound Design in Juarez, Mexico, followed by a move to Hickory, NC to work for Progressive. Changes in the industry soon saw Bob moving to Chonburi, Thailand. Over the next 20+ years, Bob worked in plants in Thailand, China, Vietnam, and Indonesia. He finally decided on an early retirement at the age of 74. Bob retired to Palm Coast, Florida to share a duplex with his sister, Sandi (Jennings) Logan and her husband Denis for 5 years while he readjusted to a cooler climate than Indonesia. He used his time in Florida to develop an exceedingly close relationship with his grandson, Brandon Gower. Together, they attended Notre Dame football games whenever the ‘Fighting Irish’ were in Florida. Bob eventually returned home to Whitehouse, Ohio. Bob had always been a notorious flirt with a ready smile who would start conversations with random strangers. Conversely, he didn’t suffer fools gladly. He attended his 60th High School Reunion and reconnected with old classmates. He enjoyed having breakfast with ‘his girls’ at “The Buzz” as well as his regular Friday lunches at various restaurants in Northwest Ohio with cronies from his days in Swanton. He was the unofficial ‘Ambassador’ of his neighborhood, sitting in his garage and keeping watch over the passing scene. He is preceded in death by his mother, Mary; wife, Jeannie; and infant son, Joshua Andrew. Bob is survived by his son Jeffrey (Laura) Gilmartin of Stafford, Virginia; his daughter Laura (Mark) Gower of Swanton; his granddaughter, Brooke (Brandon) Wunderley of Waterville; his grandson, Brandon Gower of Boynton Beach, Florida; his great granddaughter Sadie Wunderley, great grandsons Nolan and Ethan Wunderley of Waterville; and sister Sandi (Denis) Logan of Palm Coast, Florida. Robert's family will recieve friends during a time of visitation on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at Walker Funeral Home-Holland-Sprigfield Chapel (7438 Airport Hwy, Holland, OH 43528) beginning at 10:30AM until the time of the Funeral Service at 1PM.
