Jane H. Leitner Obituary

Jane H. Leitner (Janie) Our beloved Jane has gone to Heaven. The wife of Harry, mother of Tracy(Ricky), Valerie(Doug), Kurt, Clark(Jennifer), Devin(Sherry) and Nana of Erin, Ryan(Yan) Cassidy, Jacob, Cade, Elayna and Devin Jr. she was wonderfully amazing and loving to all of us. She was the daughter of Len and Florence Hickey and sister of Sally(Bob) and Lenny(Mary Ann). Jane lost her parents many years ago and her sister Sally in 2016. Jane grew up in Ardmore, PA. and attended St. Colman’s, Notre Dame de Moylan High School and Villanova University. Jane and Harry met at Villanova and were married in 1963, to enjoy 57 great years together. Our family summer vacations were legendary. Two laugh filled weeks every year at either a beach or mountain house with the children and grandchildren. In later years, cruises and bus trips were a big part of Jane’s life. Traveling the United States and Europe on more than one occasion, her favorite trips were to Ireland with her sister Sally, and Italy with Harry and with her friends. Jane had more friends than anyone we know because she was so likable. She lit up a room and always knew how to make people laugh with her quick wit. Her many friends were a source of great support and prayers during her illness. A devoted Catholic, Jane gave a lot of time and care to many church responsibilities. Her favorite was her years of extensive work with Youth Ministry at St. Catherine’s and St. Mary Magdalen Parishes. She taught religion, which she knew so well, at different parishes for years. Jane became a Eucharistic Minister at Resurrection Parish at a time when very few women did so. She was very involved in all three versions of the Cursillo Movement. One of the most impactful events was when Jane went to the Hansen’s Disease Center in Carville, LA for a three-day mission to minister to the patients. Very proud of her Irish heritage, Jane was a loving and active member of the Ladies Order of Hibernians, enjoyed Irish music and adored using her Gaelic name, Sinéad. Some of Jane’s favorite activities included reading, music and her animal friends. She was an avid reader of the best authors with a lifetime total of a few thousand books which she reviewed and discussed thoroughly at her book clubs. A great music lover, Jane seemed to know all the words and artists from every song from the 50s and 60s. A skilled bowler, Jane enjoyed competing in a few leagues with Harry and neighbors. She even tried her hand at golf. Always a caring person, Jane filled her home with all types of furry friends including dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, parakeets, turtles and even a duck name Skidder. Jane’s love, humor and enthusiasm will be deeply missed by all that knew her. The funeral mass will be private. As we cannot have a viewing, a Celebration of Life gathering and memorial service will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Jane’s name to the Sunday Breakfast Mission, 110 Poplar St, Wilmington, DE 19801.
