Thelma Victoria Shumpert Obituary

On the morning of Friday, November 27th, 2020, Thelma Victoria Shumpert went home to be with her Savior Jesus Christ. Thelma was born on June 24th, 1922, a daughter of the late Charlie and Sally Gunter. Thelma grew up in the Leesville/Gilbert area, where she met and married John “Cellus” Shumpert in 1945. Together they managed a small farm and attended Oak Grove Baptist Church. They had one daughter, Miriam. Thelma is survived by her loving family: Miriam and George (son-in-law) Umbarger; grandson, Neal and his wife, Natalie Umbarger; and great grandchildren, Carson, Collin and Chase Umbarger. Thelma was affectionally named Gimmie by her great grandchildren who she dearly loved. She is preceded in death by her husband, John “Cellus” Shumpert; brothers, Loyd, Leo, Grady, Cyrus, Griff, Donley, Paul; and her sister, Edna Steadman. Funeral services will be held at her home church, Hulon Baptist Church, Sunday, November 29th at 2:00 P.M. followed by a short graveside service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery with Rev. Robert Patterson officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 P.M. before the service at the church. Active pallbearers will be Mike, Dean and Johnny Umbarger, Mike Bailey, Johnny Dillon, and Gabbie Hayes. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Saluda Nursing and Rehab Center, where she was cared for the past four years. Memorials may be made to Hulon Bapitst Church Building Fund, 133 Hulon Church Road, Batesburg, SC 29006 or Saluda Nursing Center, 581 Newberry Highway, Saluda, SC 29138.
