Charles Joseph Eagle Hawk PINE RIDGE, South Dakota Obituary

Charles Joseph Eagle Hawk

Charles Joseph Eagle Hawk was born on May 10, 1980 at Pine Ridge, South Dakota to Christopher and Joyce (Suazo) Eagle Hawk. He was given the Lakota name S’unka Nagila by Billy and Donna Jumping Eagle. Charles also known as Big Char, Charlie, Chuckles, and Charbar made his journey to the spirit world on November 24, 2020 at his home in Oglala, South Dakota. He grew up in Manderson, SD and attended WKDS moving to Ethete, Wy and attended school at Wyoming Indian Elementary. The family moved back to Oglala, SD where he attended Loneman School and graduated 8th grade. Charlie attended high school at Red Cloud where he received his High School diploma in 1998. He continued his education at Oglala Lakota College where he received an Associate Degree in Elementary Education and continued working on his Bachelor of Science in Education. During this time, Charlie met Ohinniyan Trejo and were married in June 2008. Charlie was a history buff whose particular interest was in the civil war. He was knowledgeable about the history and wanted to become a history teacher. Charlie’s humor and humble nature always reflected a lasting remembrance to people who knew him or met him for the first time. His laughter, energy, and big heart made people smile and laugh as he was always the jokester and could make you feel better being around him. He was also very loving and caring to his many nephews, nieces, and grandchildren, the favorite uncle and grandpa. He would attend sporting events and powwows, proud of their every accomplishment and shouting it from the rooftops. Charlie was a member of the Crazy Horse Singers and an active participant in Teca Wacipi Okolakićiye, powwow circle, and community events. The love for his nephews and students at Loneman School is the reason for starting the drum group, Crazy Horse Jr’s. Charlie took pride working as a mentor passing on his knowledge of Lakota song and culture. He took them to many powwows throughout Indian country where they shared the songs, culture, and knowledge with the people. His knowledge of the Lakota Culture took him to many places in the United States and Canada, including singing with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. Charlie loved the powwow life and made many friends along the way; he will be dearly missed.
