Barbre Brunson Obituary

Barbre A. Brunson February 24, 1948 – November 27, 2020 Barbre Alice Brunson was born February 24, 1948 in Terre Haute, Indiana. She was premature and surprised her mom, Mary Alice with her birth. Barbre grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada with her brother Lance, and Mom. In 1954, Barbre’s Mom married Chester Sobsey. She had two half-brothers, Robert, and Mike. When Chester was hired by Senator Howard Cannon of Nevada in 1958, to work as the Administrative Assistant to the Senator, the family moved to Garrett Park, Maryland. Barbre entered beauty pageants and was crowned Miss Rockville. She was a Cherry Blossom Princess and a runner up to Miss USA. Lance died in Viet Nam in 1967 and Barbre supported Veterans causes for the rest of her life. She loved her Country and Elvis. She flew the Flag everyday of the year. Her Ford Explorer always had a Flag on the antenna. Barbre was married to John Zarou from 1972 to 1986. Their marriage ended in divorce. Barbre loved Horses, Las Vegas, and Cowboys. She planned for her 4-5 trips to Las Vegas each year with excitement and joy. She celebrated Helldorado in May and the Cowboy Christmas in December. She always added a couple extra trips during the year. Barbre brought everyone presents when she came back from Vegas. She would bring chocolate poker chips to the metro drivers and passengers that she had befriended. Always making sure that the “office” was outfitted with Vegas pens, soaps, tee shirts and especially Ethel M Candy from her favorite chocolate store! Barbre worked at the Government Publishing Office (GPO) for 45 years. She was the Historian of Bills and was extremely proud of her Work and her Title. She LOVED her job. Barbre’s kind heart carried over to the “office” where she supplied candy, chips, and dips on a regular basis. An “office” favorite was her savory Bleu Cheese dip that she gladly made for all occasions. Every day was Christmas at the Congressional Record Index (CRI)! Barbre took a second job at Woodmont Country Club as the Head Receptionist from 1993 to 2004 to support her expensive interests, mainly raising her cats and dogs! She was nominated and celebrated at Woodmont as the Employee of the Month in December 2003. Barbre had an incredible love for animals. She had dogs and cats throughout her entire life. For the last several years she had her Great Dane, Jackpot, and her cats: Boots, Tramp, Spurs, Pistol, and Ponderosa Alice (she named after her sister-in-law, Alice). In recent years, Barbre found half siblings Ronnie Brunson and Robin Patet. She was delighted to visit them in Minnesota in 2015. Barbre loved Christmas. She watched the Hallmark Channel Christmas Movies all year long. On September 29, 2020, Barbre had a biopsy of her lung to see if she had cancer. She went into Acute Respiratory Failure during the procedure and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for three days. Once Barbre was discharged she immediately went home to telework on her GPO laptop and printed the Congressional Record. She was determined to catch up on her work after being hospitalized! Barbre was diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney cancer that had metastasized to her right lung and lymph system on October 9, 2020. She began immunotherapy and radiation treatments the end of October. During this time, she tried not to miss work and would make up the hours when she was having treatment. Unfortunately, she suffered from an extremely dry mouth. She called it fire mouth. This prevented her from eating and drinking. She was diagnosed on November 9 with Atrial Fibrillation and spent a week in the cardiac unit of the hospital. She contracted pneumonia and was placed in ICU. Even in ICU she was asking for her CRI pages so she could work on corrections with her co-worker, Grafton. She fought a valiant fight right up until the end. She was a courageous sister and friend. She is survived by her brothers, Robert Lewis Sobsey (Alice) and Stephen Michael Sobsey (Sohiela and nephews Benjamin and Daniel), Ronnie Brunson and Robin Patet. She is preceded in death by her Mother, Mary Alice Sobsey, Lance Brunson, and Chester Sobsey.
