Doris Neil Virginia Beach, Virginia Obituary

Doris Neil

Mrs. Doris Neil died of natural causes on November 22, 2020, at home in Westminster Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Beach, Virginia at age 98. She was born in Kansas City, Missouri. Mrs. Neil is survived by her son, Dr. George R. Neil and wife Doreen, granddaughter Rebecca, grandson Daniel; her daughter Peg; and by her sister, Dr. Margery Neely; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Joyce Neely, and many wonderful nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George; brother Arthur; and her parents. She and husband George enjoyed nearly 79 years of married life together. Mrs. Neil managed a Resource Center for the 65 churches of the former Norfolk Presbytery from 1968-1985. During that period, she particularly enjoyed working with the youth of the Presbyterian churches within both the Presbytery and Synod of Virginia. She was an Elder in the church and served three terms as Clerk of Session at Bayside Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach. Doris took pleasure in the ceramic arts, contributing handmade baptism bowls to Bayside Presbyterian Church for many years, and made small items for her family. She was an avid genealogist, with a legacy of authoritative documentation for both her own family, going back generations, and for her husband’s family as well. A memorial service will be held later, when it is safe to gather. Her final resting place will be the Neil family plot at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Missouri. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. The family deeply appreciates the great kindness of the staff and caregivers at Westminster Canterbury, particularly during the difficult months of the pandemic. Daily video calls, supported by staff, enriched her life and ours. Arrangements are by Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel.
