Athanasios "Tom" Vitttas Obituary

Athanasios "Tom" Vittas from Jersey City, NJ passed away November 23, 2020. Born in Grammeni Oxia, Greece, Tom emigrated from Analipsis, Trihonidos in 1955 to pursue the “American Dream”. He worked at Western Electric in Kearny, NJ for 26 years. On Election day in 1960, he opened Vittas Haberdashery, his shop on Newark Avenue and 1998 took over Star Shoes. This year marked 60 years in business. Tom was very proud of his Greek heritage. He served the community as President and Treasurer of Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church and helped build the Community Center on Montgomery Street, served as Supreme President of the Federation of Sterea Ellas and was co-founder and President of the Analipsis Society. A generous man, Tom always helped people who needed support in their pursuit of the American Dream. He loved Jersey City and being an American. He was passionate about his business, serving his customers and relished his customers and friends stopping by the store to say hello. He enjoyed his annual summer vacation at his home in Thermo and Analipsi, Greece. He is survived by his adoring wife of 61 years, Areti (nee Tsounis); his loving son Theodore and his wife Valerie; his devoted daughters Eleni and Constantina and her husband Yianni; his beloved grandchildren John, Athan, Christina, Stathi and wife Dianne and Annette; his adored great grandson Yianni and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He will be missed dearly by his family, friends and the community. The wake will be at McLaughlin Funeral Home, 625 Pavonia Avenue on Sunday from 1 - 5 pm. The funeral service will be on Monday, November 30, 2020 at 11:30 am at Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church both in Jersey City. A short cemetery service will follow at George Washington Cemetery in Paramus, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church, 661 Montgomery St., Jersey City, NJ 07306.
