Edmund Layton Webb, Jr Obituary

Matthew 5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. The world lost a light today with the passing of “Ted” Edmund Layton Webb, Jr., on Sunday, 22 November 2020. Ted was a resident of Nampa, Idaho and long-time resident of Marsing, Idaho. He was the second of four children and was born the 13 of September 1933, in Jerome, Idaho, to Ed and Glyda Webb. He described his childhood in Melba as idyllic. The Melba community fostered his many interests and talents. He excelled at public speaking and writing, leading to state championships in speech and for the student newspaper that he edited. He also played sports while at Melba, excelling in tennis, and developing a lifelong passion for football, basketball, and baseball. He graduated as the Melba valedictorian of the class of 1951. Following his high school graduation, Ted attended two years of college at Idaho State. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints then called him to serve for two years as a missionary in the Western States Mission and he honored this calling. Upon returning home from his mission, Ted served in the US Army in Texas at White Sands Army Base and in Zweibrucken, Germany working as a supply clerk. He also received several sharpshooter medals while in the Army. He then returned to Idaho State College where he finished his degree in pharmacy and met Annette Lucile Rock who was from Jackson, Wyoming. He and Annette married and started their lives in Boise, Idaho, working for Sav-Mor Drug. In 1966 Ted was given the opportunity of taking over the drug store in Marsing, Idaho. He and Annette built a nice life there. They had seven children and his children describe working in the store with their father as some of the most memorable times of their lives. Tragically, Annette passed away in 1977, due to complications from mental illness. This left Ted with a pharmacy to run and seven children to raise. His mother-in-law, Lucile Rock, helped rear the children during this period and the drugstore became his place to spend quality time working with them. In 1979, he married Betty Ann Gines and with her children became the father of 13 children. The drugstore was a place where people always knew they had a friend. People would often come to the store to chat and find out the news in Marsing. Ted often had heartfelt conversations with people in the store and was always willing to open his store to fill prescriptions after hours, sometimes in the middle of the night. He also served the community on the Labor Camp Advisory Board, the Marsing School Board and he was a fanatic at the local sports games (especially when his kids were playing) and as a bishop of the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He ran the drugstore in Marsing, Idaho until 1993, when a fire in the store caused its closing. This broke Ted’s heart. Although he took a job at the Fred Meyer pharmacy in Nampa, Ted loved the Marsing community. He and Betty were named the Grand Marshall of the Parade, Citizens of the Year and Marsing Senior Center Sweethearts of the Year while living in Marsing. He enjoyed being involved with the great people of Marsing, Idaho, and loved drives to this beloved community in his last years. Of all his accomplishments in this life, Ted was most proud of his family. Betty was instrumental in starting Marsing Public Library and Ted bragged about her accomplishments. 12 of their 13 children graduated from college, three of them with doctorates and six with master’s degrees. 12 of his 13 children served voluntary missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Because he always led by example, Ted and Betty also served a mission as a senior couple in Connecticut. He also served 10 years as a temple worker and three years as a family history consultant. Ted always had the highest expectations and the highest praise for his children. Ted was always quick to praise and slow to criticize. He lived his life to serve others and was a stalwart in the community. He is survived by his loving wife Betty Ann Webb; his sister Julia Frost; his 13 children, 54 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers during this time of Covid, the family asks that you donate in Ted Webb’s name to the General Missionary fund for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A physically distanced graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, 28 of November, at the Melba Cemetery, 7205 Baseline Road, Melba. There will also be a zoom broadcast of the ceremony.
