Ronald Dean Haslam “Ron” was born on April 22, 1945 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the fifth child born into the union of the late Edwin J. Haslam and late Eileen P. Collimore. Ron was a graduate of the North Quincy Public School system and received further education at the Wentworth Institute of Technology. A skilled tradesman and proud member of Boston’s Sheetmetal Workers Union Local 17, Ron dedicated his professional life to the building trades working on many significant building projects across Massachusetts. After more than three decades, Ron’s last job was as a construction foreman on one of MIT’s most controversial and architecturally challenging buildings designed by Frank Gehry. Ron, also loved travel, reading, basketball, the New England Patriots and country music! Putting his faith into action, Ron was a long-standing member of the Knights of Columbus, Pere Marquette Council 271, Boston, where he engaged in many volunteer projects intended to uplift children and families in the Dorchester neighborhood. He also served as the organization’s Financial Secretary for many years. Compassionate commitment and volunteer service to those in need, particularly children, were the central themes of Ron’s life. They were also at the core of the loving relationship he shared with his life partner of more than thirty years and husband, Gustavo Vara-Billota, a native of Lima, Peru. Ron was deeply involved with the Peruvian Community of Massachusetts (COPEMA) and a volunteer at the Shriners Hospital for Burns. For many years, he actively supported charity events to aide sick children travelling from Peru to Boston for medical treatment. For over thirty years he performed at charity events to raise Christmas donations for Peruvian and other underprivileged children. He especially enjoyed playing the role of “Santa Claus”. In 2010, Ron retired and moved with Gustavo to his native Peru where he continued his charitable efforts. He created a “Haslam Club” to teach English language to young students and teachers in Lima. And every year around Christmas, he would work with Gustavo and local volunteers to travel to small villages in poor areas to bring gifts, school supplies and happiness to children. Prior to his passing, Ron and Gustavo were in the process of adopting a Peruvian boy named Juan Carlos Sanchez whom Ron referred to as his beloved son. However, before this dream could be realized, Ron passed away at his home peacefully on the morning of Sunday, November 22,2020. He leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted husband Gustavo, his siblings, Edwin Haslam, Jennie Ross, Paul Varney, Pete Varney and Sheila Howard, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of dear friends. He was predeceased by Kenneth Haslam, Daniel Haslam, and Patricia Haslam. Ron devoted his time and efforts to help the poor and underprivileged in Massachusetts and Peru.
