Obituary

Joan Kay Russell

Joan Kay (Ruble) Russell passed on Friday, November 20, 2020, at the age of 83 at Wooster Community Hospital.  Her passing was sudden, leaving her family and friends with a deep sense of loss.  She was known to everyone as just “Kay”.

Kay was born to Chester C. and Gladys R. (Dickinson) Ruble on June 25, 1937, in Griffith, Indiana, as the youngest of four children.  She grew up around the Indiana and Michigan area before graduating from Lowell High School in 1955.  She was an honor roll student, active in school clubs, and a member of the band where she played the clarinet and marched as a majorette.  After high school, Kay and her family moved from Lowell to Hammond, Indiana.

Kay met Ronald W. “Bill” Russell on a couple’s blind date while he was serving in the military at a local army base.  The story has been told that Kay really liked the “other” guy on the blind date, but the date ended up being fate for them both.  Bill and Kay married on December 20, 1958, at the South Side Christian Church, in Hammond.  The couple spent their first years of marriage between Ohio, Indiana and Michigan where they started their family before settling in Ohio permanently in 1970 to raise their four children.

Kay worked for several well-loved local eateries over the years in Wooster including Perkins Pancake House, Friendly’s, and the Kaffee Haus.  Even after retiring from Westfield Insurance after over 20 years, she went back to work at the Kaffee Haus to help out her long-time friend, Mabel Jordan.  She connected with and befriended many people in the Wayne County and surrounding areas over the years of working in the community.  Kay had an uncanny ability to remember facts about everyone with whom she was acquainted: names, birth dates, ages, spouse, children, grandchildren, relatives, where they lived, milestones in their lives, important dates.  If you wanted to scoop on someone in the area, you went to Kay.  Her husband, Bill, referred to her as “the boss” which was befitting of her personality.

Kay loved to read and was an avid sports fan.  She kept up with the local news through the Wooster Daily Record.  She rooted for all of her favorite sports teams from the local high schools to the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, and her beloved (The) Ohio State University Buckeyes.  From the time her children were young, she supported them in all of their life activities from music to sports to academics.  She was at every concert, track meet,  baseball game, football game, and halftime show.  After her kids were grown, Kay continued to support her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their various scholastic and extra-curricular activities.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Gladys; her husband, Bill; her daughter, Beth Lynn (Russell) Wake; her sister, Patricia (Ruble) Augenstine; and her brother, Charles “Chuck” Ruble.  Kay is survived by her brother-in-law, Donald Augenstine, of Cathlamet, WA; her brother, Roland (Barbara) Ruble, of Rockwall, TX; her sister-in-law, Gretchen Ruble, of Crown Point, IN; her children, Michael (Pam) Russell of Ravenna, OH; David (Reggie) Russell of Rittman, OH; Rod Russell of Lewisville, TX; and son-in-law Mark Wake of Louisville, KY.  Kay leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Eric (Heather) Ramsier, Thomas (Laura) Russell, Katy (John) Wesalowski, Zachary Wake, Jonathan Russell, and Ryan Wake; great-grandchildren, BraeLynn, Sophia, Landra, Olivia, Hayleigh, Talon, and Felicity.

Arrangements are being made through Murray’s Funeral Home in Creston, Ohio.  Kay will be interred at the Canaan Cemetery in Canaan, Ohio, just outside of Creston at a future date along with a graveside service for all friends and family who wish to attend.
