Caroline Clara Kennebeck Obituary

Caroline Clara Kennebeck, 91 of Sturgis died November 23, 2020, at Sturgis Monument Senior Care Center. Caroline was born in Lane, SD, on April 15, 1929, to William and Ella Pawlowski. The family moved to Tilford, SD, when she was 5 years old and that is where she grew up along with her eight siblings. She had many fond memories of growing up in the small Tilford community. The love of family, sitting on the porch playing the guitar and singing with her Dad and sister, Virginia. The closeness of friends and neighbors in good times and bad, and ice skating at the Blair Ice Skating Rink. She graduated from Sturgis High School in 1947. After high school she worked for Kate Soldat doing secretarial work for the newspaper. Caroline married Robert Kennebeck on May 24, 1950, and they had 62 wonderful loving years together. They had four children: Nancy, Ron, Ellen and Rhonda. Caroline and Bob lived and worked on ranches in the area before settling in Sturgis where they lived out their years together. She stayed home and raised her family until Rhonda, the last child, was in school. She then worked for the school food service for 17 years before retiring. In 2014, Caroline moved to Aspen Grove Assisted Living and then resided at Sturgis Monument Senior Care until her passing. Caroline was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where she served in many capacities. She loved music, especially the old gospel songs, and enjoyed playing the piano, guitar, and singing. Crafts were a passion of hers, she sewed, knitted, crocheted, and made many plastic canvas projects. She treated everybody with respect and was willing to help when anyone needed something. She was happiest when surrounded by her family. She will be remembered for always having a smile and her pleasant personality. Caroline is survived by her children: Nancy (Darrel) Cox, Vale; Ron (Ellen) Kennebeck, Austin, TX; Ellen (Roger) O’Grady, Sturgis; Rhonda (Roy) Waterland, Vale; twelve grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren; her brother, Bill Pawlowski, Deadwood; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; parents; two infant sons, Rick Lowel, and Virgil Leroy; her siblings, Gwendolyn, Harold, Melvin, Jimmy, Bobby, Leroy and Virginia. A memorial has been established to Trinity Lutheran Church in lieu of flowers. Public visitation and viewing will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sturgis, on Friday, November 27, 2020, from 12:00-1:00 p.m. followed by a private family service and burial will follow at Bear Butte cemetery.
