Richard ‘Dick’ Dean Baker, son of Benno Beede and Pauline Louise (Young) Baker, was born on December 17, 1940 south of Creston. He attended country school south of Tingley and graduated with the class of 1959 from Tingley High School (the last class to graduate from there). Following his graduation, Dick farmed for Paul Dukes of the Diagonal and Shannon City areas. He later moved to Creston and farmed for Frank Wickham and the Dwyer Family. He also farmed for Tom Dobson of Lenox. He always worked a second job for area farmers throughout his life. Dick had a passion for farming. Dick was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ann Hayes on February 27, 1965 at the St. Malachy Church in Creston. This marriage was blessed with five children, Richard, Jr., Jeanine, Jennifer, Erik and Anne. Dick worked for Purolator for 11 years until the business closed, then worked for Burlington Northern Railroad, laying rails for a couple years. Most recently Dick was employed with Green Valley Chemical until his retirement at the age of 63 in 2004. After retirement Dick and Betty went on numerous bus trips around America, mostly to the east coast with their friends. Dick was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Creston along with the Knights of Columbus. Dick loved to fish and enjoyed having coffee at the Salebarn with his many friends. He occasionally visited the Elm’s Club for a pork loin and a beer. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and sitting outside watching for hummingbirds. Although he wasn’t much of a traveler, he enjoyed a yearly camping trip to the Iowa State fair for a pork chop on a stick and to watch the tractor pull. Dick will be remembered for his sense of humor and his famous phrase “Don’t take any wooden nickels!” Left to cherish his memory are his wife Betty Baker of Creston; children, Richard Jr. (Laura) Baker of West Des Moines, Jeanine (Roger) Adkins of Nevinville, Ia., Jennifer Auen of Carroll, Ia., Erik Baker of Rosemount, Minn. and Anne (Doug) Heiser of Des Moines; nine grandchildren, Bryant Adkins, Ariann Baker, Kysa Auen, Brielle Baker, Olivia Auen, Braden Baker, Delaney Heiser, Ben Baker, and Abigail Baker; sisters, Barbara Trisler of Mount Ayr and Virginia (Lynn) Berry of De Soto, Ia.; brother Mark (Janelle) Baker of Diagonal; along with other extended relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Benno and Pauline, brother Robert ‘Bob’ Baker, sister-in-law Connie Baker, mother and father-in-law Glenn and Helen Hayes, daughter-in-law Michelle Baker, niece Julie Baker, nephew Shane Hayes, niece Mary-Catherine Buckholtz, brother-in-law Bill Hayes, sister and brother-in-law Dale and Anita Thomas and two sisters-in-law Linda and Judy Hayes.
