Carl Irvine

Carl Edward “Pete” Irvine, age 93, of Clearview Estates, Covington, Virginia died Sunday, November 22, 2020 at his residence. He was born May 26, 1927 in Clifton Forge to the late Lucius and Mary Alice Miller Irvine. Carl served in the United States Navy at the end of World War II aboard the U. S. S. Essex and also during the Korean War. He was an employee of Westvaco for more than 40 years and retired from the Boiler House as Foreman, also working as a consultant for Westvaco. He was a member of McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon. He was also a member and previous Commander of the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Covington, and the Odd Fellows. He also served on the Westvaco Credit Union Board of Directors for a number of years. He loved fishing, could fix anything, and was a caregiver to his wife for 8 years until his stroke in 2017. In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Jean Hayslett Irvine; siblings, Tommy, Calvin, Lee Roy, Donald and Mary Helen; and his beloved son-in-law, Thomas W. Vess. He is survived by two daughters, Gwen Vess-Whitmore and husband Kenny of Covington and Carla Irvine Mills and husband George of Chester; four grandchildren, Benjamin Carlton “Benjie” Vess and wife Kay, Tomalei Jeanine Vess, and Matthew Carlton Mills, and Justin Caleb Mills; two great grandchildren, Dylan Wade Vess and Draven Quinn Whitmore; four siblings, Nancy Glover, Ronnie Irvine, Larry Irvine and wife Sue, and Bobby Irvine and wife Debbie, all of Lynchburg; and a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, November 27, 2020 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Jim Moss and Reverend Bill Gilliland officiating. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum of Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. Graveside military rites will be conducted by members of the Curtis A. Smith VFW Post 1033. There will be no visitation. However friends may call anytime at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice Volunteers, PO Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422 or Rockbridge Area Transit, 712 N. Main St., Lexington, VA 24450.
