Nancy Joan Horan Syracuse, New York Obituary

Nancy Joan Horan

Joan Horan, a longtime resident of Livingston, Montana, passed away on November 22 in Delmar, NY. Joan was a retired nurse who moved to Livingston from Syracuse, NY in 1999. She spent many summers working at the Lake Hotel in Yellowstone National Park. She also worked at Denali National Park in Alaska, Glacier National Park, Isle Royale National Park and the Florida Everglades National Park. Joan greatly enjoyed Yellowstone and the many friends she made there. She loved hiking, camping, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, white water rafting and fishing. She was affectionately knick-named "Grizzly Joan" after she met a grizzly face-to-face while hiking in Yellowstone ...they looked at each other and the bear turned and walked away. She always said her secret was that she wasn't afraid. Joan spent her winters staying active as a volunteer at the Stafford Animal Shelter, the Livingston Food Pantry, Loaves and Fishes, Habitat for Humanity and Frontier Nursing Home. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Mackey of Delmar, NY and her sons, Daniel Horan and his wife Arlene Horan, James Horan and John Horan, all of Syracuse, NY. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Funeral services are Wednesday at 9:15am at the Goddard-Crandall-Shepardson Funeral Home and at 10am in All Saints Church. Burial will be in White Chapel Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4-6pm at the funeral home, 3111 James Street. Memorial contributions may be made to Stafford Animal Shelter in Livingston or the Livingston Food Resource Center.
