Barbara Ann Gilliss Obituary

Surrounded by family, Barbara Ann Gilliss passed away peacefully on November 21. 2020 at Shannex - Neill Hall. Barb was born December 1, 1947 in Fredericton NB and was the daughter of the late George “Duke” Deap and Loretta (Hogan) Birch. She will be dearly missed by her husband and the love of her life Rich Gilliss, her three sons, Chris Gilliss of Toronto Ontario, Jeff Gilliss (Sarah Jane), and Jason Gilliss (Amber), of Fredericton, her grandchildren Samuel, Nathan, Brittany, Jacob and Alex. She leaves behind her brother Dan Deap and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was pre-deceased by her sister Donna Deap and stepfather Jack Birch. She received her early education at St. Dunstan’s School and FHS. She graduated from NB Teachers College in 1967. During her career as an elementary school educator, school librarian and resource teacher, Barb held positions at various Fredericton schools, but spent the majority of those years at Forest Hill School. Her library was always the most organized and the absolute best decorated for each Season and Holiday. She especially loved working with the early elementary students. Barb’s life was the embodiment of generosity and giving, always putting others first. She was active in Beavers and Cubs, Block Parents, the School Lunch program, and was an area coordinator for TOPS Club Inc... But her greatest pleasure was the time she shared with her family. She was happiest when she was surrounded by Rich and the boys, their wives and her grandchildren, and extended family. The wonderful meals she prepared and served to her loved ones were legendary. The  family wishes to thank the Bayshore caregivers, Extra Mural nurses and therapists, all of the medical and personal care staff at Neill Hall and Dr. Flower for all the love and caring support they provided to Barb and her family over the last several months. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private family funeral service will be held in Fredericton. A public memorial celebrating her life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the Diabetes Association, Parkinson’s Canada or a charity of your choice. Chipman Funeral Home and Crematorium has been entrusted with the arrangements. Online condolences and sharing of memories may be expressed through the Memory Wall on the Chipman Funeral Home website.
