Arthur Leroy was born on June 10, 1944, in Sheldon, the son of Wessel and Margaret (Bomgaars) Van Riesen. He was raised in Sheldon and attended the public school. After his graduation from high school, he worked for Kenny’s Super Value in Sheldon until being drafted into the United States Army where he served for two years, primarily in Germany. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Sheldon where he was united in marriage to Adriana “Tootie” De Hoog on June 28, 1967. They briefly lived in Sioux Falls until Art was offered a job as the assistant manager at Kenny’s Super Value. In 1980, Art and Tootie moved their family to Orange City, where Art was the manager of Southtown Foodland for more than twenty years. In 2001, he began working as a sales representative for KeHE, a wholesale food distributor. After retiring in 2009, he started helping in the kitchen at the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. Mr. Van Riesen was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church, where he had served on the consistory and prayer teams. He was also an active member of the Pressman Kosters American Legion Post in Orange City. He spent many hours volunteering at the Orange City Area Health System and at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City. His genuine love for people was evident by the time he spent playing cards and visiting those that could no longer go out, taking nursing home residents fishing, and regularly giving blood. He truly found joy in using his time to benefit others. He is survived by his wife of more than 53 years; a daughter and her husband, Melinda and James Faber, of Rock Valley; two sons and their wives, Michael and Janelle Van Riesen, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Matthew and Sheila Van Riesen, of Park Rapids, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, Collin Faber, and his wife, Jennifer; Justin Faber, and his wife, Josie; Brady Faber, and his fiancé, Alyssa De Jong; Michaela, and her husband, Tim Aulner; Jacob Van Riesen; Adriana Van Riesen; Grace Van Riesen; Logan Van Riesen; and Aliesha Van Riesen; a great-granddaughter, Emersyn Faber; four sisters, Evelyn, and her husband, Peter Kroese, and Henrietta, and her husband, Raymond Schnurr, all of Sanborn; Mary Abels, of Orange City; and Dorothy, and her husband, Herman Schwarz, of Sheldon; two brothers and their wives, Dean and Kelly Van Riesen, of Dallas, Texas; and Marvin and Deanna Van Riesen, of Sheldon; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
