Browning, Earl Emmerson Sr. Passed away peacefully on November 21, 2020 at the age of 84. Earl was born November 17, 1936 in Logan, West Virginia son of the late Myrtle Inez Jeffery. Earl was baptized in 1955 at West Logan Baptist Church. He is survived by his son’s Earl Emmerson Jr, Kent Hamilton (Kelly) and daughter Brooke Ann Borders (Jeff). He is also survived by 9 grandchildren (Bryant, Lindsey, Matt, Zach, Briggs, Chase, Avery, Sophy and Emma), his sister Linda Moore (Ira) and two brothers Scott Jeffrey (Phyllis) and Kenny Jeffrey (Karen). Earl graduated from Marshall University in 1958 where he started all 4 years on the varsity football team. He went on to earn his M. Ed. And Rank I Education Certification from the University of Louisville. He was a lifelong educator and taught high school for over 35 years, 1 year in Logan, West Virginia and the rest in Louisville, Kentucky. Earl coached several sports while teaching: including swimming, basketball, track and field and his lifelong passion, football. Earl started his football coaching career at Logan High School in Logan West Virginia, then continued his coaching career from 1958-1975 in Louisville Kentucky where he coached at Westport High School, Waggener High School and Fern Creek High School. After retiring from head coaching Earl continued his passion and the love of football as Director of the Louisville Nike Coach of the Year Clinic, which was widely considered the best coaching clinic in the country. Earl developed and directed these clinics for over fifty-seven years. He started Telecoach Inc. which produced numerous football manuals and educational resources for football coaches. His clinics and manuals featured top notch coaches, like Paul “Bear” Bryant, Bud Wilkinson, Duffy Daughtery, Nick Saban, Bobby Bowden, Lou Holtz, Dabo Swinney, Urban Meyer, Ed Orgeron and his close friend, Tom Harper. Earl Cox, a local journalist once wrote “Browning probably knows as many head coaches as any person in the United States. Coaches trust him and call him often for advice or to help get them jobs”. Earl used football as a tool to teach young adults the value of being a team player, sticking to the fight when hardest hit, respecting others is the best way to be respected, and success is not measured by money or power, but about the amount of lives you impact. He loved seeing young athletes grow and progress on and off the field. He used his knowledge for the game of football to provide play by play announcing on the radio for the Trinity Shamrocks. Starting in 1992 he served as a radio and television color analyst for Kentucky High School Football games, including the Kentucky High School State Championship games. Among the honors he has been accorded are his appointments to the National Football Foundation, the College Hall of Fame Advisory Committee, and the Johnny Unitas Award Committee. Earl also has been honored locally while being inducted into the Greater Louisville Football Coaches Association Hall of Legends in 1998, Fern Creek High School Hall of Fame, Westport High School Hall of Fame, and Trinity High School Honorary Alumni. While football was Earl’s lifelong passion, he would claim his biggest accomplishment in is his life was his family and his love for his family was unmeasurable. He married the love of his life, Sally Lou Baisden on November 30, 1957. They had 4 beautiful children and made a lifetime of cherished memories. Earl treasured Sally’s support and felt she was the backbone to his successes. He loved Sally’s family especially her sister JoAnn and brother-in- law Neal Scaggs Sr. and was always grateful for their kind hearts. Earl was a family man and always enjoyed returning to his roots in Logan, West Virginia to visit his mother, as well as his sisters and brothers. He spoke often about the memories he had with his siblings. To know Earl you would know that he was a storyteller, and always had a story ready to tell. He was not shy to draw anyone into his stroll down memory lane. If you also had the chance to spend any amount of time with Earl, you would know that he loved horses. Sally and Earl both had an instant connection to the horses when they came to Kentucky, and they eventually found themselves in the business of thoroughbreds. They found this to be a joint hobby and enjoyed many days on the backside. His friends held a special place in Earl’s heart, whether it be a golf outing, poker night, lunches or just talking on the phone. Earl loved being around people and valued these relationships, especially his friend Tom Cheaney. Tom has been a good friend to Earl, and our family thanks Tom for the love and support he has provided. During the last few years of Earl’s life, his biggest joy became his grandchildren who he adored and loved whole heartedly. Earl recalled in his final days “God blessed all that I have been given” . Earl is proceeded in death by his loving wife Sally Lou Baisden Browning, his daughter Robin Lynn Byrd (Ron), his mother Myrtle Inez Jeffrey, his sisters Patty Jeffrey, Barbara Browning, and his brother Larry Paul Jeffrey. The family would like to thank all of Earl’s friends and family for the ongoing support during Earl’s amazing journey, especially these last few years. Earl will be laid to rest next to his wife on Monday, November 23, 2020 during a private family service at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Ky.
