Who can find a virtuous woman for her price is far above rubies ~Proverbs 31:10 Elaine Hall Pettit was born on October 30, 1936 to the late George and Mary Hall in Onancock, Virginia. Her transition to her eternal home was completed in the quietness of morning on Thursday, November 19, 2020, surrounded by her loved ones. Elaine willingly accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age and joined Metropolitan United Methodist Church. She remained a faithful member and served in various capacities, which was reflective of her stewartship. Elaine was the chair of the Council Metropolitan and president of the United Methodist Women. She served as the chair of the Trustees, Staff Pastor Parish Relations (SPPR), and the finance committee. She was also a member of the adult fellowship, conference delegate, Vacation Bible School, Summer Enrichment Program, and an original member of the Lee Mont Charge Community Choir. Elaine received her education in the Accomack County Public Schools and was a graduate of Mary N. Smith High School. She matriculated to Norfolk State College, now Norfolk State University, and received her bachelor’s degree in Music Education in 1959. Elaine returned to Accomack County Public Schools to begin her teaching career in 1960. She began teaching at T. C. Walker and later at Accomac Primary until her retirement in 1984. She touched many lives and always had a kind and encouraging word to pass along. In 1988, Elaine became the president of Triangle Enterprises and she held this position until her demise. On July 19, 1969, she married Chester Pettit, Jr. and their union was blessed with one son, Ashley G. Pettit. She was affectionately known as “Big Laine” to her son and “Mrs. E.” to her daughter-in-law. Elaine was a dedicated mother, diligent and dedicated supporter of her church, even in illness she remained connected to the workings of Metropolitan. She was an accomplished soloist and member of the Norfolk State Traveling Choir. She traveled sharing her voice for requested stages, featuring her special gift of song. Elaine had a passion for gospel music, especially traditional hymns sung by the choir. She took great pride in her fashion, especially her love of hats. Lending advice, delegating, and passing along her knowledge and wisdom came second nature to her. In addition to her parents, Elaine was preceded in death by her husband of nineteen years, Chester Pettit, Jr.; two brothers, Hayden (Rosetta) Hall and Brooks (Christine) Hall; five sisters, Juanita (John) Hall-Humphreys, Irene (Fred) Conquest, Inez (Willie) Strand, Hilda Washington, and Thelma (Clifton) Williams; father-in-law, Chester “Biggy” Pettit, Sr.; mother-in-law, Dorothy Pettit; brothers-in-law, Charles Pettit and James Pettit; and sister-in-law, Mary Pettit. Elaine leaves to cherish her memories: one son, Ashley G. Pettit (Kesha) of Onancock, VA; one granddaughter, Layla Pettit; two sisters, Katherine Claud of Baltimore, MD and Mary White of Savageville, VA; two brothers-in-law, Clarence Pettit (Helen) of Wilmington, DE and Lonzo Washington of Birmingham, AL; sister-in-law, Gustava Pettit of Daugherty, VA; goddaughter, Marsha Tull (Mitchell) of Onancock, VA; Vernon “Cle” Gunter of Onancock, VA, whom she loved as a brother; Nelle Topping of Savageville, VA and Loretta White of Onancock, VA, whom she shared a sisterly bond; faithful friends, Tom and Arlene Riley of Savageville, VA; stepchildren, Colette Pettit of Onancock, VA and Chester Pettit, III of Parksley, VA; special niece, Rachel Hall; beloved nephew, Willie “Charlie” Strand; Metropolitan Church family; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
