Arnold Martin, Sr. Reno, Nevada Obituary

Arnold Martin, Sr.

Dear Dad, Fearless that is what you made me. I am the youngest of four, your only daughter, the one person to whom you never said “no”. I am the child you taught to speak her mind. “Say what you mean; mean what you say.” It’s the early years of life in my ruffle dresses and ankle socks, riding in your 1964 orange GMC pickup truck (stick shift of course) that you taught me to drive at eleven years old, that I remember and cherish. I remember riding with you to McKinley Park Elementary School to catch night crawlers, teaching me to hold a flashlight and catching worms without breaking them. Yes, Dad, we caught coffee cans full of worms and the next morning mom (Bernice Mathews), Arnold Jr., Anthony, Allen, and I would go fishing!… Lahontan Reservoir, Derby Dam — wherever there was water in Northern Nevada, we would go fish! “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a (wo)man to fish, you feed him for life.” You taught all of us to hunt, too! I will never forget my first time firing your Ithaca overunder shot gun at the age of six! How you laughed while I cried because it kicked me over. I still have that shot gun, dad. Thank you. Your road to Nevada is courtesy of the United States Military. After serving eighteen long months “ boots on the ground” during the Korean Conflict, Reno, Nevada is where you would call home. It is here in the Silver State you raised your family and worked for Sierra Pacific Power Company until retirement. You were also known as the “farmer of Reno.” People would come from near and far for our fish fries and listen to your brother, Ruben Sr., tell stories! Every summer you and mom (Bernice) would load up the truck and drive us to your family farm in McComb, Mississippi. Mom taught me how to read maps, although no one could give you directions! And we better not ask to pull over to use the restroom! That was not going to happen. Dad, mostly you taught me how to curse! Military Style! All “the ways a word can be used as a noun, verb, adverb, adjective, and pronoun; you taught me well. Arnold, thank you for being a great teacher and mentor to many. We know you are proud of us all: Arnold Martin Jr., Anthony Martin, Allen Martin (deceased) and Aileen Martin. Arnold Martin, Sr., born September 7, 1930, left us November 16, 2020, at 90 years young. Due to COVID restrictions, a Celebration of Life Service will be held the summer of 2021.
