Rev. Donald Hassel Harris, age 78, of the Grissom Creek section of Council, Virginia, passed away Thursday (November 19, 2020) at his home. Born February 1, 1942 in Buchanan County, Virginia, he was a son of the late Johnny Warren and Emma Jane Spencer Harris. A lifelong resident of the area, he was of the Freewill Baptist faith and a member of Venia Chapel. A disabled coal miner, he enjoyed playing horseshoes and attending church. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ora Della Adkins, and sons-in-law, Donald Rose and Gary Johnson. Survivors include his wife of fifty-two years, Wilma Lee Harris; one daughter, Teresa Gale Rose; two sons, Danny Harris and wife, Joanna, and Jeffery Harris and fiancée, Barbara; grandchildren, Amy Johnson and companion, Larry Byrd, Gary Johnson and wife, Keisha, Joshua Perkins and wife, Katie, Jonathan Harris, Angela Harris, Arianna Winebarger, Kami Harris, and Kayla Harris; great-grandchildren, Kaydence Perkins, Tyler Perkins, Amelia Lazo; two sisters, Rachel Harris and husband, Drew, and Faye Harris and husband, Brady; brother, Elmer Harris and wife, Mary; a host of family and friends also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Revs. Wendell Harris, Billy Harris, and Roy Lee Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in the Harris Cemetery on Combs Ridge. Pallbearers will be Clifford Breeding, Doyle Lester, Chester Ball, Chris Davidson, Chris Colley, and Elmer Ball. Honorary pallbearers will be William Harris, Kenneth Musick, and Lee James. The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6:00 PM Monday, where an evening service will be conducted at 7:00 PM with Rev. Guy Harris and Rev. Robert Tiller officiating. Due to COVID restrictions mandated by the governor, a mask is required. For those unable or uncomfortable attending, the service will be livestreamed on our Facebook page as well as our webpage.
