Bonnie Baker Harris, 95, passed away on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at Pocahontas Healthcare and Rehab in Pocahontas, AR. Bonnie was born March 22, 1925, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to James Oscar and Tola Sisk Baker. Bonnie married Dr. Warren G. Harris on May 21, 1950. She attended elementary school at Bakerden, graduated as salutatorian of her class at Couch High School in Missouri, and attended Williams Baptist University. After graduation from high school, Bonnie taught grades 1-8 in a one room school. Later, she had a long career as a substitute teacher. When Bonnie retired from teaching, she began volunteering with St. Bernard’s Five Rivers Hospital Auxiliary. She served as secretary and president and proudly wore a 5,000 Hours of Service pin from the Auxiliary. Her early volunteer work began in the schools. She was always a room mother, an active member of PTA and Band Booster Club, a Cub Scout den mother, a Girl Scout day camp leader, and any organization that involved her children and needed her help. Bonnie was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church. She sang in the choir, served on countless committees, was a Sunbeams and Girl’s Auxiliary leader, and was Sunday School Secretary for more than twenty-five years. In the early 70’s, Bonnie became a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She served on both local and state board of directors. She played an instrumental role in the establishment of local programs such as Relay for Life, “Look Good, Feel Better”, Reach to Recovery, and others. Bonnie received the W.W. Scott Public Service Award, the Beta Sigma Phi Woman of the Year, and the American Cancer Society Volunteer of the Year. For many years, when disaster struck, Bonnie hit the road with the Arkansas Baptist Disaster Relief ministry. She also served many years on the Randolph County Nursing Home Board of Directors, was a member of the Northeast Arkansas Chorale, and loyal supporter of the Imperial Dinner Theatre. Bonnie loved to travel. At the age of 82, she visited Florida, completing her goal of visiting all 48 contiguous states. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Warren; and siblings, Willard, Neil, and Blanche. Bonnie is survived by her children, Molly (Mike) James, Sally (David) Wellman, and Daniel (Sheryl) Harris; grandchildren, Amy (Chris) Lynch, Travis (Shelly) James, Bryan (Larinda) James, Zac (Cherish) Wellman, Matt (Kari) Wellman, Chris (Sara) Wellman, and Owen (DaYonna) Harris; 9 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Graveside service will be Saturday, November 21, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. at Walnut Grove Cemetery, with Rev. Eric Moffett officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, Bridge of Hope, or American Cancer Society.
