Allen "Al" Berg Obituary

Allen "Sonny" Berg, age 83 of Hastings, died peacefully on Friday morning, November 20, 2020, at Tinta Wita Tipi Senior Living in Welch. Allen Wayne, the son of Anton and Minnie (Olson) Berg, was born on February 10, 1937, at home in rural Cannon Falls. Al attended country school and later enlisted in the United States Army Reserves. On December 23, 1957, he was united in marriage to Shirley Miller. They were blessed with sixty-one years of marriage, four children, and many fun memories prior to her passing on August 24, 2018. Al was a forty-year member of the Local 49 Union where he worked at JL Shiely as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement in 1998. Al enjoyed golfing with friends on Wednesdays, traveling with Shirley, collecting old hats and belt buckles, and especially enjoyed watching and collecting old Westerns. He never missed the opportunity to find the best lutefisk, lefse, or klubb, and would always make sure to bring some home for others. Most of all, Al enjoyed always being on the go and cherished the time spent watching his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren's sporting events. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Burnette Banker, Marlene Willis, Vi Friese, Orville Berg, Marvin Berg, and Joyce Berg; grandson, Ricky Berg; and by his wife, Shirley. Al is survived by his children, Patty (John) Kosec, Scott (Kathy) Berg, Steve Berg, and Michael Berg (Katie Chamberlin); grandchildren, Nikki (Duane) Zimmerman, Jake (Angie) Kosec, David Sherry, Brett Berg, Blake Berg, Abbie (Derek) Lauwagie, and Molly (Josh) Harper; great grandchildren, Conner Zimmerman, Elayna Zimmerman, Kendra Lawin, Callie Kosec, Alec Kosec, Brooklyn Lauwagie, and Reese Lauwagie; sister, Rosie (Percy) Thompson; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 25, 2020, at Lakeside Cemetery in Hastings, with Pastor Joel Rova-Hegener officiating. We invite guests to bring a lawn chair and warm clothing as we gather to celebrate Al's life. Arrangements are being completed by Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel of Hastings.
