Paul Richard von Richter Obituary

After battling multiple health issues, the family of Paul Richard von Richter announces his passing and peaceful rest which began on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. In addition to his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Kathy (McCann) von Richter, he is survived by his daughter Christina “Crissy” Fanelli, son-in-law Frank and grandson Matteo of Corunna, ON and daughter Lori Coleman, her partner Phil Walsh and grandchildren Ariel von Richter, Nick and Lily Coleman and their father Tim Coleman of Sussex, NB.  Born in Saint John, NB on September 13, 1940, he was the son of the late William and Muriel (Harned) von Richter. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Chris “Sonny”, Don, Ivan, Alward and Nicky.

Paul was fortunate enough to spend his career doing what he loved, working as a TV producer for CHSJ, Global and Rogers, retiring after 45 years.  Paul will be remembered by many for his active participation as cameraman in the production of the Empty Stocking Fund, which he looked forward to and thoroughly enjoyed each year.  He had a passion for the artistic - from photography to woodworking, from crafts to writing, Paul always had a project on the go. Over the years “Lion Paul” held every office that the Lions Club of Hampton had and held the role of Secretary for many years.  Among a plethora of awards, he was recognized for his active service and honoured by the club with both the Melvin Jones Fellow and the Judge Brian Stevenson Fellowship awards.  Making uncountable appearances as Huggy Lion and working the annual Lions Club car shows were labours of pride and pleasure for Paul.

Always a tease, ready with a joke and a laugh, Paul loved bringing smiles to the faces of those around him, whether he knew them or not.  Grampie doted on his grandchildren, having a special love for the babies and little ones in his life.  For these qualities and his benevolence, he will be missed.

A very heartfelt thank you to Dr Beth Carson for her exceptional care over the last several years and the nurses and doctors of 5C North who cared for Paul over the last four months.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 7th from 2-4 p.m. & 6-8 p.m., with a Lion’s Club Tribute to be given at 5:30 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Hampton, on Friday October 8th at 11:00 a.m. Due to the current pandemic and public health restrictions. Mask and social distancing are required, and proof of vaccinations and government issued ID are required to attend visitation and service.   Interment to be held at Holy Cross, Saint John.  The family is asking that donations in memory of Paul be made to the Empty Stocking Fund, the Lions Club or a charity of the donor’s choice.
