Lawrence F. "Bud" Riley Obituary

On Tuesday evening, November 17, 2020, Lawrence Frank “Bud” Riley left this world to spend eternity with the Lord. Visitation is from 9am-8pm on Tuesday, November 24 at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Graveside service is at 1pm on Wednesday, November 25 at Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Lawrence Frank, “Buddy” to his family, was born July 8, 1931 in Wilburton, Oklahoma, to Joseph Edward and Emily Lee (Hawkins) Riley. At the time he entered first grade, the family moved to Wister, Oklahoma. He had three older siblings: Jo Ed, Mike and Dorothy. They enjoyed swimming and fishing in the nearby mountain creek. He attended the Baptist Church. Bud’s sister shared that he was a very good baseball player. He loved the game and excelled at it. She said that his high school coach said he had the most natural ability he had ever seen. He graduated from Wister High in 1949 at age 17. At this time, he began his career with the Santa Fe Railroad. Bud came from a long line of railroaders. His paternal grandfather, father and his father’s four brothers all worked for the railroad. Also, in 1949, he married Louise Vise and moved to Enid, Oklahoma. They had two children, a daughter, Kathy, and son, Frank. The family moved to Newkirk, Oklahoma in 1954. In 1965, Bud married Joleta (Waldorf) Riley and gained two daughters, Jayne and Jana Alexander. They welcomed another daughter, Elizabeth, in 1969. Bud left the railroad in 1967 to join his father-in-law, Bill Waldorf’s heating and air business which then became Waldorf-Riley Heat and Air. He very much enjoyed this work and the people and friends he made in the process. Whenever unable to recall a name, he would refer to them as “ole outfit,” then would give us clues until we figured out who he was referring to. Bud was hard working, easy to get along with and friendly. He enjoyed country music and playing along on his guitar with his favorite side kicks Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. In 1997, Bud and Joleta sold Waldorf Riley in an attempt to retire. After five years, and missing the work, they opened Bud’s Heat and Air. He retired the final time in 2010 and truly missed it, always wishing he had a job and could still be working. In these latter few years, he lived at the Presbyterian Manor where he developed dear relationships with the staff there. The care and compassion shown to him was a gift. He considered them family. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, wife Joleta and daughter Kathy. He is survived by his son, Frank (Darla) Riley, of Norman, Oklahoma, daughters, Jayne Fry of Wichita, Kansas, Jana (Chris) Wooderson of Arkansas City, Liz (Brian) Shepard of Arkansas City, sister, Dorothy Feltman of Prague, OK, and sister-in-law Julie Waldorf of Tulsa, OK, grandchildren Eric Newell of Mustang, OK ,Rance (Mary Beth) Riley, Norman OK, Suzanne Fry of Wichita, KS, Corbyn (Ali) Fry of Topeka, KS and Madeline Shepard of Arkansas City, great grandchildren, Carder Riley, Crue Riley, Knox Riley and Noah Fry. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Presbyterian Manor Employee Fund or Central Christian Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
