Pearl Matheson Holmes

HOLMES, Pearl Matheson – New Glasgow It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother on November 19, 2020 in Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow at age 94. Born in New Glasgow, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Elliot (Matheson) Charlton. Pearl graduated from the Aberdeen School of Nursing in 1949 and worked for many years as a Registered Nurse at the Aberdeen Hospital. Early in her nursing career she expanded her skills working in Massachusetts and at the Polio Clinic in Halifax. Pearl married the love of her life, the late Alex W. Holmes, in 1961 and subsequently put her career on hold to become a full time mother and home maker. After her boys moved on to junior high school she returned to nursing working at the Edward Mortimer Nursing Home in Pictou. Pearl enjoyed dancing, cooking, watching sports and spending time at the cottage. Her greatest joy came from the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. In her earlier life she and her sister Mildred could be often found at the skating rinks with their racing skates. Surviving are sons Glenn (Barbara), Richard (Susan), Barry (Brenda) and daughter Mary, and eight grandchildren; Lauren, Nicole, Ryan, Matthew, Stephanie, Cathy Lee, Gregory and Suzette. Pearl is also survived by her sister Mildred Poulain, a sister-in-law Myrtle Holmes, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Alex, her sister Mary Wadden, brothers-in-law Alex Wadden, John Poulain and Bertie Holmes. The family would like to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you to the staff at High-Crest Place for the daily care and compassion they provided mom during the past five years and also to the staff at Glen Haven Manor for her short but restful stay there. In keeping with Pearl’s wishes there is no funeral service. A family graveside service will take place at a later date. angusfuneralhomes.com “ Forever in our hearts”
