Cameron John Obituary

Cameron R. John passed away on November 13, 2020, from cardiac arrest. Cam was born in Logan, Utah, on December 22, 1961. Cam was creative, adventurous, and a master of repurposing “stuff.” His windmills made of hubcaps and bicycle parts and his garden creations were loved by his family and friends.

From an early age, Cam was always looking for an adventure from jumping off Grandpa John’s house, to riding remote control tractors like a skateboard through the kitchen, or building a cabin in the buff - literally. Cam was decidedly his own person. By the time he was 16, Cam was an accomplished rock-climber, having learned to climb at the epicenter of climbing:  Boulder, Colorado. His ascent of one of the big walls in Yosemite graces the cover the legendary Pat Ament’s book, “Rock Wise.”  Cam’s love of the outdoors and rock hunting and collecting were things he enjoyed throughout his life.

Cam was brilliant mechanically and had an insatiable thirst to learn, to better himself, and most importantly to help others. Cam was generous to a fault, and often put the interests of others before his own.

In the last 2 years, Cam had the financial means to start a new life; instead, he chose to stay in an old motor home, create a beautiful garden with his dogs, help his friends, and live close to his mother.  He loved having lunch with her every Sunday and took great pride in the garden he created at her house. Among his favorite activities were playing with his nieces and nephews.

Recently Cam bought a used motorcycle, and immediately went to show his 70-something-year-old mother. He lovingly put a helmet on her and took her for a wild ride.  After, he called his Aunt AJ to share his glee that his mom would really get on the bike to enjoy this happy moment with him.  With his mother’s health declining, Cam was tender and loving and dedicated to finding the best care and help for her.

Cam is survived by his mother, Janis Bartschi Smith, Evanston; father, Ronald O. John Sandy, UT; sisters, Melanie Smith, Evanston, Debby Burke, Manitou Springs, CO,
Callie John, Shell Beach, CA; brothers Marty Smith, Parker, CO, and Alan Smith, Casper, WY; Uncle Brent Bartschi (AJ) Tuscon, AZ; Aunt Julie Pitcher, Logan, UT; and his cousin Mike (Susan) Jones, of Cherry Creek, UT; and many cousins and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his Grandparents Ora and Geneva John and his Aunt Iris (Erv) John Jones, Aunt Katherine (Woody) John Clark; and Aunt Hope John.

A private family service will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, November 21, 2020. Friends and family can watch the service live at crandallfhevanston.com. Internment in Providence, UT.
