Henry Unger Obituary

Peacefully on November 18, 2020 at Portage General Hospital with his wife of 65 years by his side, Henry Unger went to be with his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ at the age of 86.

Dad was born on August 30, 1934 in Neuenburg, Manitoba to William and Elizabeth Unger and was the oldest of four children. He spent his formative years in Winkler and Morden before his parents moved to MacGregor in 1949.

In 1950, dad started working as a mechanic for Stan Firth in MacGregor. His career as heavy-duty mechanic included several years at Carnation in Carberry before working at Blight’s Case IH in Portage la Prairie for 25 years until his retirement in 1999.

On September 18, 1955, dad married the love of his life Clara Friesen. They had three sons; Brian, Dennis, and Bruce. They built their home half a mile west of MacGregor in 1964 and remained there until moving into Beaver Creek Villa in MacGregor in 2012.

Dad enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, attending every sporting event of theirs he could. He and mom travelled many times to Ontario, Florida, and Arizona to visit his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren that live out of province. In the last few years, dad took great joy in visits or FaceTime calls from his great-grandchildren.

In retirement, dad remained active by volunteering with the MCC Store in MacGregor, Meals on Wheels, and Manitoba Development Centre in Portage, as well as lending a helping hand or driving those that needed a ride to an appointment.

Dad was an active member of West End Community Church in MacGregor, helping build the church before serving as a deacon and teaching Sunday school.

Dad is survived by his wife Clara, daughter in-law Pam Unger, grandson Mitch (Amanda), and their son Blake, granddaughter Lacey {Eric) St. Denis and their children Peyton, Brielle, and Camdyn, granddaughter Heidi (Doug) Ramage; son Dennis (Nancy); son Bruce (Barb), grandson Scott (Leslie), and their children Lukas and  Kenzie, grandson Tyler (Caitlin), and their children Rylee and Emery, granddaughter Ashleigh (Brad) Smith, and their children Zoey and Gracie; sisters, Tena (Glen) Sawatzky, Edna Funk, brother Bill (Shelly) Unger and several brothers in law and sisters in law.

He was predeceased by his son Brian in 2013.

The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to Dr. Tyler Nelson and the healthcare staff at the Portage General Hospital for their excellent care.

In lieu of flowers, donations in dad’s honour can be made to Valleyview Bible Camp.
