Mildred Mary Cochrane Obituary

Passed peacefully away on November 19,2020 at the James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander NL, Mildred Mary Cochrane (nee Cashin) at the age of 91 years. Predeceased by her loving husband of 48 years James (2004), treasured daughter Susan (1978), siblings Kathleen, Gertrude , Frances, Mary, Angela, Rita, Gregory, William and John. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories, are daughters Jill Rutherford (Martin)-Kelowna BC, Maureen Jenkins (Craig)-Gander NL; her grandchildren who adored her; Ian-Vancouver BC, Susan (Liam)-Calgary AB, Julie (Jamie)-Toronto ON, great grandchildren Eli and Charlotte-Calgary AB, her loving nieces and nephews, a large circle of beloved extended relatives and friends, as well as the staff of Nightingale Manor in Gander, who truly were her ”family” too. Born Feb. 13, 1929, the youngest child of Patrick and Susan Cashin, she was raised in Gambo, Newfoundland. Firmly believing in education and self reliance, she completed her teaching certification at Littledale College in St John's,NL; learned to drive (a rarity even for a man in those days) and owned her own vehicle prior to marriage to Jim. After starting their family in “Old Gander”, she and Jim built their home in the new townsite with one of the building co-operative groups. She taught primary and elementary grades at St Joseph’s academy for 25+ years until retirement and dearly loved her students as well as a full social life in Gander. Material things were of little importance, but helping people was what simply mattered. A prolific reader, she will be remembered for her curiosity and engagement, tenacity, pragmatism, sense of humour and her enjoyment of spirited and witty discussions about current affairs. She enjoyed a good card game, good music, a big meal of NL grub or international cuisine, and of course - a good nap. Our Gratitude and appreciation is extended to the staff of Nightingale Manor as well as the team of doctors, nurses and staff at James Paton Memorial Hospital for the wonderful dedication, care and compassion shown to Mom and our family during her illnesses. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made to your local food bank or a charity of your choice in remembrance of her.
