Tobin, John Edward
Nov 17, 2020. Age 76. Beloved husband of Celeste. Loving father of John (Janette) Tobin, Darlene (John) Hamel and Todd (Michelle) Tobin. Grandfather of Haley, Hannah, Hayden, Marley, Todd, Marissa and Trey. Brother of Jackie (Bob) Penman. Brother in law of Norbert (Kitty) Kozlowski, Rose Marie (and the late Charles) Heil, Walter (Judy) Kozlowski, Joe (Kris) Kozlowski and the late Joecile Kozlowski.
John was born in Detroit. He was the son of John II and Margaret Tobin and the younger brother of Jackie. His childhood was spent in Detroit and Lincoln Park. John and his family also had a close connection to Windsor, Ontario Canada, where many of their relatives lived.
John was a proud graduate of All Saints High School in Detroit where he excelled academically, athletically, and of course, socially. He received the Sam Madden Award, given to the top student athlete in the Detroit Catholic League. John went on to earn an undergraduate degree from Central Michigan University and a master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University.
After college, John met his beautiful soulmate/wife, Celeste, at Difco Laboratories in Detroit. They married and moved to Dearborn where they raised their three children: John IV, Darlene, and Todd. They remained happily married for 51 incredible years.
John was a presence throughout the great city of Dearborn where he influenced many lives. He spent 37 years as an educator for the Dearborn Public Schools. He was a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and Driver’s Education Instructor/Director. But most important, John was a friend, mentor, and role-model, and an example to the community. He was our community.
John held multiple positions but spent most of his career teaching sixth grade and as principal at Whitmore-Bolles Elementary. He was a fixture at local events. You could find him daily at local parks, ball fields, playgrounds, and high schools, supporting our local youth. He retired in 2003 from Lindbergh Elementary. Throughout his career and after retirement he taught traffic classes for Dearborn’s 19th District Court.
John made an impact on everyone he met. He loved to tell stories and teach lessons. His seven grandchildren meant the world to him. He spent his retirement babysitting, picking up and dropping off at school, and attending sporting events. In addition to his incredible career, his family remembers him as a loving, generous, and humble man who provided unconditional love and support to his family until his last days.
John will always hold a special place in the hearts of the many people whose lives he touched.
