GALENA, KANSAS: Gerald Wayne “Jerry” Richey, age 69, passed away Friday evening, November 13, 2020 at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, MO following a courageous battle with COVID. Jerry was born February 19, 1951 in Tulsa, OK. His parents were Lemuel Lee and Wanda LaRue (Nelson) Richey. He was a lifetime resident of Galena. He attended Galena High School. Jerry worked at Yellow Freight, Baxter Springs, KS for 25 years. In 2007, he began working as the City Superintendent for the City of Galena until his retirement in 2012. He was a member of the Galena Fire Department for 9 years. Jerry was a member of Christpoint Church in Galena. Among his interests were fishing, hunting, and going on road trips with his wife. Jerry married Karen Cusick on May 12, 1968 in Joplin, MO. She survives. Additional survivors include two sons, J. R. Richey (wife, Donnie), Columbus, KS and Erick Richey (wife, Misty), Bentonville, AR; one brother, Howard (wife, Beth) Richey, Baxter Springs, KS; and his 5 grandchildren who affectionately called him “Papa,” Brooke Richey, Tyler Richey, Gannon Richey, Jared Richey, and Kaitlyn Richey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Catherine Tackett. Graveside services will be at 10:30 am, Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at Hill Crest Cemetery, Galena, KS. Dr. Josh Pennington will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena. KS.
