Mary Lou grew up in Kalamazoo, graduated and earned her Bachelor's degree at Kalamazoo College. She taught high school in that area where she met her husband, a fellow teacher. Later she earned a Master's degree at Western Michigan College. When her husband accepted a position as a professor at University of Rochester, Mary Lou and her young family moved to the Rochester, NY area where she was the homemaker for her family, eventually going back to teaching when her youngest started kindergarden. When her husband accepted a position as Associate Dean of Research at Gallaudet College, the family moved to the Silver Spring area where she has resided ever since. During that time, she completed a second Master's degree from Gallaudet College. She worked as a teacher for the Hearing Impaired in Prince Georges County for many years until her retirement. After she retired, she retrained as a Reading Recovery teacher for Prince Georges County, and continued to teach, finally retiring again from formal teaching at the age of 75. For many years afterwards, Mary Lou taught through Riderwood's volunteer program, teaching reading in local schools. Finally, she volunteered at Bond Mill Elementary for many years in the K-1 classrooms that one family of her greatgrandchildren attended, helping with primary writing and reading skills. Mary Lou impacted many lives, and she was known as being kind, gracious and quietly loving the Lord. Memorial Contributions may be made to Liberty Grove UMC. https://www.libertygrovechurch.org/
