Douglas T. Laite Obituary

LAITE, Douglas Thomas April 19, 1939 – Nov 13, 2020 Making people smile, enjoying his music and welcoming all around him to the end, Douglas “Doug” Laite breathed his last breath in St. John’s, on November 13, 2020 at the age of 81, with family at his side. Faithful and loving husband to wife Jane (nee Angel) of 52 years; father to Susan (Rod); Nancy (Dave) and Michael; and proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Simon, Amanda, Jessie, Kate, Claire and Olivia. Born to Alfred and Amelia Laite, Doug grew up in St. John’s with his six siblings: Gordon (Carol), Alfred (Bryl & Helen), Rudy (Edie), Peg (Ray), Joan (Tom) and Jeanette (Robert). Doug leaves to mourn a large extended family in the Laite, Noftall and Angel clans along with countless friends. Doug lived a very public life in many ways, enjoying a vibrant career on CBC Radio and Television. Perhaps most well known as the host of CBC Television’s “All Around the Circle,” Doug was the host of many CBC Radio Programs, including The Morning Show, Radio Noon, On the Go and Country Jamboree. Officiating the Ocean Ranger Disaster’s funeral service, many Royal Visits and countless Santa Claus Parades, Doug’s voice was present in households throughout Newfoundland and Labrador for 30 years. In his private life, Doug was an avid outdoorsman. His love for salmon fishing brought him to many remote corners of the province, with the Gander River, Grandy’s Brook and Grand Codroy being among his most-loved rivers. He was known to get his moose every year and always had a feed of fresh fish at the ready. Well loved by so many, Doug could be counted on to be the life of a party that was usually filled with many family who were also friends. Music filled his world to his last days, with Frank Sinatra – who he believed to be the best entertainer of the 20th century -- on rotation. His love of show tunes and musicals ensured he could not be stumped on CBC Radio’s Trivia Shows. His love of performing is what brought him to meet his wife Jane all those years ago, at a drama festival in St. John’s. We will all miss his wonderful sense of humour, his many talents in the kitchen (especially known for his partridge, moose stew and flipper pie) and his warm and welcoming personality. Doug had a gift for making people feel welcome. If you were a guest in Doug’s home, you were the centre of attention as though you were a guest on one of his radio shows. His last years were filled with time with his grandchildren and at his cabin at Rocky Pond. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the caregivers at Pleasant View Towers 1SW. There is no visitation at this time. Service and internment to be held at a later date. In memory of Doug, the family asks that you enjoy a meal with friends, have family in, or turn on some Frank Sinatra and take a turn around your living room.
