DOROTHY C. SHELL Obituary

Dorothy Shell May 12, 1928 – November 10, 2020 Dorothy entered heaven the morning of November 10 from her home in Benicia, California which she shared with her daughter Rhonda and son-in-law Bradley Wilcoxen. She took great joy in her three grandchildren and their families: Catherine Hicks, her husband Joshua and their children Audrey, Anna and Joshua; Timothy Wilcoxen, his wife Laura, and their daughter Thalia, and Carl Wilcoxen. She leaves behind one sister, Colleen Aufdembrink, one brother, Bob Willyard, and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her son, Kevin, and husband, Bob, and brothers Shirley and Don Willyard. Dorothy was born in Golden, Missouri and was the first of her siblings to go to college. She became a registered nurse, moved to California where she met her husband Bob, worked in various healthcare settings before and after being a stay-at-home mother, and ultimately retired from Merritt Hospital in Oakland. Dorothy and Bob built their house in the Oakland hills in 1959 and she enjoyed landscaping and gardening their half acre lot for over fifty years. She was a faithful Christian and member of Central Baptist Church in Alameda before moving to Benicia and joining Castlewood Baptist Church in Vallejo eight years ago. During her mothering years, she sang hymns as she did her housework and took her children to church every Sunday and Wednesday. In her senior years, she read her Bible daily, watched online sermons on her computer most days, loved to read, and was in the middle of a few books when she passed. She had 900 books in her Kindle account! Her Christian faith, love of reading, and generosity to her children and grandchildren will bear fruit in the generations to come. Private services will be held on November 19. Donations may be made in Dorothy’s memory to Alpha Clinics in Vacaville, California, Prison Fellowship, or Open Doors.
