Marquita B Hassebroek Obituary

Marquita Boye Hassebroek of Medford, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Saturday November 7, 2020 surrounded by her husband of 65 years DeWayne James Hassebroek, their children and grandchildren. She was born in Henderson, Texas, the only daughter of the late Carl and Bessie Boye of Tulsa, OK.

Marquita met DeWayne in Oklahoma City while he was in air traffic control school and she worked for Alcoa Corporation. DeWayne’s career, first in the Army, then with Dow Chemical, took him and Marquita to Arizona, Alabama, Germany, Illinois, Texas and Ohio, and then Medford, New Jersey, all while raising a family of four.

Marquita was a wonderful storyteller and had a sharp sense of humor. She was an avid reader of murder mysteries. Getting older did not bother her, she said, since she could forget the who-dunnit and enjoy the book multiple times. While raising her children, she created a home full of love and laughter everywhere they lived. Though she was a private person, she loved being a part of her community, joining numerous organizations: PTA, Garden Club, Bridge Club, Gourmet Club, and the Ladies Auxiliary to Virtua Hospital.

Marquita loved Medford as well as spending time with friends and family at Lake Winnipesaukee and on Nantucket. She adored being near the water and enjoyed the view from a beach, dock or ferry.

Marquita is survived by her husband DeWayne and was the loving mother of Dan Hassebroek, Susan Smart, Sally Merchant, Doug Hassebroek and his wife Naomi Hassebroek. She was a devoted grandmother to: Elizabeth and James Smart, Marie-elle and MeiLiu Merchant, and Jane, Lydia and Felix Hassebroek.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, December 1, 2020, 11 a.m., at Protestant Community Church Cathedral of the Woods in Medford Lakes, NJ. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be sent to the American Lung Association.
